AN IRVINE singer/songwriter has stars in his eyes – quite literally.
For up-and-coming act Sean Kennedy has been working with eighties’ superstars Andy Taylor, from Duran Duran, and Nik Kershaw on his new material.
And talented Sean only started taking his music seriously four years ago.
Ex-Greenwood Academy pupil Sean is a gifted footballer and was on Hibs’ books for a year, as well as playing for Irvine Vics and Ayr United.
But when Sean was 20 he was forced to retire from professional football with a serious knee injury.
He explained: “I had to have a bone transplant and have stem cells injected into my knee.
“I was on crutches for three months, and for someone who was used to playing football all the time it drove me mad.
“That’s when I started writing songs and singing.”
Up until that point, Sean had only ever played around with music, although his dad Colin was frontman of popular Irvine band Dancefaction.
And by the time docs gave Sean the all clear, he was hooked on his music.
Since then the 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength.
He said: “I only really went solo in the last year, before that I played in band.
“Then I suddenly had a manager and he recommended that I go to Ibiza to busk.
“It’s a lot of dance music out there so my style kind of stood out.
“I was staying in Sonic Vista studios while I was over there and that was where I met Andy Taylor.
”He liked my stuff and invited me back to record with him.”
Sean added: “It’s amazing that these eighties’ stars are interested in working with me.
“They’ve been very complimentary though and they say they get a lot out of working with young new artists too.”
Sean isn’t signed to a record label yet but is working hard to build up a collection of 40 songs he can take to show them.
He said: “I want to surprise them with the amount of material I have.
“I’m about half way there just now and Andy’s still writing stuff in Ibiza so I’m getting there.”
Sean regularly plays gigs in Glasgow and supported JJ Gilmour, ex-lead singer of The Silencers, on Sunday.
