exclaim.ca/News/rough_trade_to_set_up_shop_in_new_yorkIn addition to being the iconic record label behind bands like the Smiths, Young Marble Giants, the Libertines and the Go-Betweens (not the mention UK releases from the Strokes and Arcade Fire), Rough Trade is also a shop with two locations in London, UK. Soon, North Americans will have a chance to visit the store without crossing the ocean, since it will be opening up a New York location this fall. Fittingly, the store will be located in the music mecca that is Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighbourhood. This retail location is apparently even bigger than the London flagship store, Rough Trade East. In addition to being a shop, it will host in-store gigs and plans to be converted into an intimate after-hours venue. The live venue will be run in partnership with the Bowery Presents. "At long last, we can finally confirm the next bold step in our evolution" said Rough Trade co-owner Stephen Godfroy in a statement. "We're extremely excited at the prospect of handing over the 'blank canvas,' that is a Rough Trade store, to the music lovers of New York, allowing them make it their own culture agora, just as the people of London have so successfully achieved, with downturn-defying results." While it's closer than England, this New York location is still quite far away for many Canadians. In that case, here's some more good news: RoughTrade.com will be launching a U.S. version of its online store.

I was thrilled to find the flat my girlfriend and I rented last December was a short walk from the Notting Hill Rough Trade shop. I spent some time and money there during our stay.
Very excited to discover their NYC shop will also be a short walk away, this time from my apartment.
