The highlight of Friday night for me was DD in Hyde Park and I was not even there. However, what did all you non-Brits make of the Opening Ceremony itself?

Yes, my feelings exactly, and after DD hubs and I watched Midnight in Paris instead. It might have been a better choice, from what I've heard. I did see the Queen + 007 sequence on Youtube (pretty cool) and Mr. Bean, but that's about it. Not what you'd expect for an Olympics opening ceremony, is it? The word out is that it was spectacular, but I have a feeling that's the agenda put out to the press and that the actual reaction from viewers is more on the lines of "wtf?"

My hubby & I were rather disappointed. There wasn't very much "wow factor" for it being the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. There were a few aspects that were kind of cool, but over all it just wasn't very impressive. We were also pretty surprised that with all the British icons they integrated into the show, there was no mention of Dr. Who at all. We were kind of expecting a TARDIS to be paraded around, or a Dalek included with the "monsters" segment, but there was absolutely nothing.
I also didn't hear any Duran songs being played during the parade of nations. Maybe there was one or two played and I just didn't hear it due to the TV announcers talking over it, or maybe it was played during one of NBC's commercial breaks (which seemed to be quite frequent).
I also have to say that I am extremely disappointed in NBC for their editing of the show. To leave out the tribute to the terrorist victims and replace it with a Michael Phelps interview, and claim it was because "they know what the American public wants to see", is just shameful. I think the execs at that network have their heads up their a**es.

I enjoyed it, but agree that it lacked the "wow" factor of other opening ceremonies. I have a feeling they're saving things like Doctor Who for the closing ceremonies, maybe. I'd love to see a Tardis show up with all of the living Doctors popping out of it! Including the one in my avatar. :-) I loved the Mr. Bean segment, the Industrial Age segment, and the way the cauldron was lit. The use of LED lights during the ceremony was pretty cool, too. It's worth remembering that staging Olympics opening ceremonies as huge, eye-popping extravaganzas is a fairly recent affair - it really began with the 1980 Moscow Olympics, and since this was the Cold War, when Los Angeles hosted the summer games 4 years later they staged the first real HUGE opening ceremonies bash - and it's been a game of one-upsmanship ever since. There's actually a pretty cool website I found recently that has information on every summer Olympics opening ceremony ever held, and it's very interesting to see how it grew from a tiny little ceremony to the gigantic entertainment juggernaut we're all used to. Check it out: www.olympicceremony.org/#!CEREMONIES/cod0
