Put it this way...they can't bastardize the legacy any more than he already had with the (mostly) awful prequels. Who knows, Disney just might step back, bring in the right talent, and end up making the sequels (VII - IX) better then Lucas would have. Of course, the first thing they should do is fire Rick McCallum's ass and bring back Gary Kurtz (producer of the original Star Wars - later subtitled A New Hope - and The Empire Strikes Back, not coincidentally the two that are far above the rest in near universal acclaim and adult palatability). There has long been no doubt in my mind (only reinforced all that much more by recent revelations) that Kurtz was the single most important person in making the films "real" and believable, always reigning in George's more outlandish desires and rooting the production in gritty, used universe realism and forcing George to get the most out of limited budgets (the best art is almost always a product of limitation and struggle, not having digital effects capable of giving you anything you want at any moment)! In any event, I'm so burned out by the overwhelming glut of Star Wars commercialism in recent years (yeah, I know, its always been bad, but the "brand" - I f&%#ing HATE whenever Madison Avenue types refer to anything as a "brand" - has become an out of control megalith and I'd say I'm not the only one who has grown numb to it, as shown by the way that Ep. I in 3D was pretty much ignored by everyone when it was released in theaters early this year. Still, I did see that Lucas is supposedly donating the entire $4 billion (from the sale) to educational charity. So perhaps this was his redeeming moment, as he turned back to the light side and threw his own "Emperor" (his franchise) into the abyss that is Disney.  |
