NARM AND THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCE THE “DEFINITIVE 200” CAMPAIGN
New York --- NARM, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, along with the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame today announced the launch of their “Definitive 200” campaign. The campaign, which asks, “Where Would You Be Without Them?” is not the first attempt in music history to rank some of the most commercially and critically successful albums of all time, but it is the first time that these two storied organizations have joined forces to promote and market a list in such a comprehensive, meaningful way.
The Definitive 200 is the, in a word, definitive, list of 200 albums and soundtracks that should be in every music collection. The list will be released and albums highlighted at retail stores nationwide on Tuesday, March 6th, kicking off a week of promotional activities. The culmination will be Monday, March 12th in New York, which Mayor Bloomberg has proclaimed “Definitive 200 Day” in the city. Definitive 200 events will include appearances and live performances by legendary and cutting edge artists, as well as a national media tour.
“We are really excited to be able to offer the Definitive 200 collection to the record buying public” says NARM president Jim Donio, “The idea is basically that you can’t go wrong. If it’s in the Definitive 200, you can be assured that the CD is a classic, with enduring relevance.” NARM represents over 7,000 stores, which sell over 85% of all music sold. “This list came from the retailers’ perspective,” said Donio. “Both new and old titles, from Rock, Country, Soul, everything. These are the albums that our members have seen, over time, continue to move people and be a significant part of their lives.”
“Music is a powerful and emotional part of our lives,” says Joel Peresman, president and C.E.O. of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “We are pleased to be working with NARM’s retailers and music labels to bring the Definitive 200 to the public so people have the opportunity to add to - or replace - their collections with the music that has defined our times.
Peresman comments, “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving and exhibiting music and memorabilia of the top artists and influences of our time, and the Definitive 200 well represents the artists that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame as well as possible future inductees.”
In the digital era, in which virtually every song ever released is downloadable as a single, the Definitive 200 campaign primarily celebrates the art form of the album. Signature albums which contain big hits also have lesser known cuts, which many fans may never find or know about if they content themselves with singles and “Greatest Hits” compilations, neither of which are part of the Definitive 200. For the next several months, the music business and media will all be wondering whether their favorite albums are among the Definitive 200. On March 6, 2007, the world will find out.
