Hi!
As some of you may already know, I have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or simply lupus). I was diagnosed in 1998 and have had many different health issues since then. My last major crisis that some many know about was when I had my blood platelet count drop into the basement a couple years ago, so low that I was told by my doctors to not work in case I cut myself and bled to death before my levels went back up, which they fortunately did. I received a lot of support from my fellow fans here on the message board, and I was hoping that you all would help spread the word about this cruel mystery that is lupus. What it is, exactly, is a chronic illness where the autoimmune system becomes overactive and starts attacking your own body's cells as if they were germ cells. No one knows what exactly causes this to happen (hence the "cruel mystery"), and there is no cure. May is National Lupus Awareness Month in the US, and while World Lupus Day is May 10, the Lupus Foundation of America is asking everyone to please Put on Purple for lupus awareness on May 17.
