Below is a review I received today of my new EP (Momentary Lights) and the reviewer repeatedly compares my vocals to Simon... and yes, trust me, I know that I am no Le Bon, but I thought it was very flattering and that some in this forum might find it amusing. Bittersweet Machines return with Momentary Lights, another EP that blends the 80s new wave sound with modern pop. Matt Mocharnuk's voice is a dead ringer for Duran Duran frontman, Simon Le Bon, so much so that you may think that you are listening to some unreleased Duran tracks.
Momentary Lights is released hot on the heals of Solituda the first full length for Bittersweet Machines, which was released in December 2012. It is a four song EP that can't be missed for lovers of the band's signature sound.
The EP opens with "Reinventing The Afterglow" song that has a vocal that sounds more like Simon Le Bon than Simon Le Bon does. If you are familiar with Matt's vocals from the full length, this won't come as much as a surprise, but for the casual listener, it is difficult to believe you aren't listening to some hidden Duran Duran track from the early 90s.
"Sleepy Planet" is a rocking track. Matt's vocal is so very British sounding. It is hard to believe that he's based out of Greensboro, NC. This song has a throbbing bass line and a great beat. The melody will get your heart racing. The lyrics are trippy and psychedelic; "I close my eyes and see a world that’s waking/ From deep, deep sleep to find a world worth saving."
The next song takes you in the opposite direction. "Through The Sideways Rain," is an artfully arranged ballad. The strings give this song a melancholy feel that suit the lyrics to a tee.
"The Minerva Situation" is the final song on Momentary Lights. Like "Through The Sideways Rain" the tone of the track is very moody... sad....depressing....otherworldly. The song is about death and goodbyes. It leaves the listener wondering what brought this story out in song.
Momentary Lights is equal parts rock and ballads, giving the fan base a little present in between full length albums. The quality of these four songs is what makes this EP such a gem.
"Reinventing The Afterglow" and "Sleepy Planet" both have single potential. Their melodies one as pure pop gold and the other as pure rocking fun. Both of these songs have a heavy Britpop/New Wave sound.
"Through The Sideways Rain" and "The Minerva Situation" show Matt's moody, slightly emo side. These beautiful ballads, are a bit of a downer, but still offer the listener an enjoyable four minutes.
Listening to Bittersweet Machines is always like taking a trip back in time, and grabbing the good bits to mix into some new concoction. The end result is something that will appeal to listeners looking for something with a touch of nostalgia as well as appealing to those looking for something modern.
Momentary Lights is a great introduction to Matt Mocharnuk's music as well as a great addition to any fans collection. It may feel like a teaser to those eager for more music, but there is Solituda for those just jumping on the Bittersweet Machine band wagon.
Duran Duran fans will surely be the first to jump on, because after one listen, they'll feel like they are listening to their favorite band. How Matt seems to channel Simon Le Bon both through his songwriting and is vocals is a mystery that the universe may never figure out.
All mysteries aside, Momentary Lights is an EP that you definitely want to add to your collection. In a day when most albums only have four strong songs and the rest filler, Momentary Lights offers you just that in EP form. These songs will give you faith in music again and they will be songs that you will play over and over.
