By the way... As for Discogs: With a respect to the contributors, in many cases the matrixnumbers differ to your pressing as the contributor has another pressing than you have (where another plate has been used for the same record). Besides that i think that many sellers go for the easy way and upload pressings without looking if it is already listed, so there are some doubles.
So, it is 'healthy' to use more sites and cross-link them.
One remark about Ansgars post: In a few cases German and Dutch pressings are hard to indicate because some have an 1A number on the sleeve and a 1C number on the labels. I have seen this with Notorious and So Red The Rose. As for French pressings, often these came in the same sleeves as the Dutch pressings (hence the 'manufactured...' line which mentions Holland, but the vinyl itself is pressed in France as these has the typical French matrix indenfication (and some pressings have beige labels instead of the custom design labels).
I love this topic, can you tell?? Hahaha

I'm so glad I just look for different artwork, coloured vinyl and specific promo's and not for label and matrix variations...that's way to hard work But great topic!!!

"I tend to look out for interesting covers, not paying much attention to matrix numbers."
I collect in the same way. I basically want to get the music as complete as possible, find promo's with special remixes or pressings that feature different songs like the Japanese cd's. Then I look for (mostly) vinyl with different artwork, sleeves, colour etc etc. And bootleg vinyl of course, like most of us. But I will not buy the 7" of The Reflex from Peru because it features The Seventh Stranger on the b-side. If it came in an unique picture sleeve or on coloured vinyl than I would buy it but not for having a different b-side. I do know that I'm a very selective collector, I have a pretty specific wants list.
I really love to read about how deep some of us are into collecting and find topics like this very interesting but I could never go that far myself. I always find that seeing everyones areas of interest is one of the most fun parts of this corner.

".". I really love to read about how deep some of us are into collecting and find topics like this very interesting but I could never go that far myself. I always find that seeing everyones areas of interest is one of the most fun parts of this corner. I agree, i enjoy reading what people added, found or have questions about. This week i received mint copies of the UK 7"s of GOF and CM, i am just as happy to have those as a bootleg. I welcome the day that DD decides to put out more vinyl with new music, not only the lps (which is a good start) but also 7" and 12"s. Preferably having a special 12" remix only (or even better a Night Version!!)

Whilst it's not been updated for a few years, Tom (Tm) had a pretty good discography www.ionpool.net/duran/index.html that covered the general releases - though he wasn't interested in going into label variants at the time i half-raised it...I have to be honest, I don't like this discography very much. Sure it's rather complete but it contains no visuals. I myself have always "used" the Spanish collectors site al lot when looking for sleeve variations or when searching for matrix number's: www.durancollection.com/This site has pictures of all the records and information about matrix numbers and tracklistings. I like this site a lot. It's been my bible for a long time I use the Wiki link also a lot and quite a few people here in the Collector's Corner have their own collector sites. They are also very much worth checking out as most also contain a lot of pics and information. You're both quite correct that i should have included at least some of these in the list of places to look - that it was the morning here & i hadn't slept is my only excuse - though, again, there's things that aren't on them that are in Tm's list or the wiki or on none of them... As is noted though, originally the title to the question was something like "How do i collect", which i personally thought was the more interesting bit at the time... Well, whilst, as said, there's probably a core selection of rare/expensive stuff that we'd all want copies of, we're all different & that's what makes it all interesting.

Which ones John? And what size t-shirt? well I cant find an image at the moment, but its not the ones pictured below! Although I would like an unworn one of the bottom left (the photo booth shot with 'duran duran' printed in gold across the front). That one is probably my favourite duran shirt and I tend to wear it at all duran concerts I go to! There a few from this era I am still looking for. There is one in particular. Hard to describe but the band are outside, dressed in colourful clothing (similar dressed in the 'too much information' video) and looking up to the camera. Does that make sense?
I know which one you mean. Will post a pic tonight for you.

I think this is an opportunity for all of you to show off! Lol. I suppose I'm a Duran vinyl bootleg collector first and foremost. Then it would be Japanese vinyl / CD's. But not just anything, otherwise I would never have any money! It's just a bottomless pit that proves to be a very expensive, extravagant hobby. I tend to look out for interesting covers, not paying much attention to matrix numbers. I have to be careful not to be compared to a train spotter, no offence guys!! I also love posters but again, it has to catch my artistic eye. If I get excited by it then I want it..it's as simple as that! I love japanese books because the detail is so perfect and glossy with high quality paper. Everything the Japanese do puts other countries to shame..they are perfectionists when it comes to production. Then I'll look out for other interesting rarities / oddities that spring up from time to time. I also collect T shirts. I must have about 60 - 70 duran t shirts now!! I wear them aswell! Or they'll just rot away. I can't store them away..it would be a crime not to enjoy them. My favourite era fir shirts is The Wedding Album. I think that tour produced the largest range of duran t shirts world wide ever. I'm still looking for ones that I know exist..in my size! Lol As with any bit of Duran collecting, there's a seemingly never-ending range of shirts been made over the years... Well, inc the ones that are in Canada atm (lots of my N American purchases go via someone else to save on postage & customs) then i should have well over 300 now, & i'm well aware that doesn't even touch the sides of what's out there (& official)...
i'm not 100% sure that TWA has the most tour shirts though, as there were stupid nos for both the Sing Blue Silver & Astronaut (esp adding in the alt coloured crew shirts) tours... & both had some shirts with alt backs for different bits of the world.
i do agree though that, as an overall range, TWA ones were generally the most stylish imho - though the green tour jacket was on the hideous side. Have they ever had a cool tour jacket?
& i assume that the TWA shirt you're referring to is the white one that kind of matches this poster (with the gold 'frame' being vertical & them being shown full body) -
