I always thought the punch holes were a customs & excise procedure? To search for illegal substances and so forth? i've never heard that before... normally deleted/cut out records don't get exported. they're domestic only. so if you live in the usa, you're going to the record store and buying records made in the usa. imports are separate. in the 80s in big box music stores, imports were pretty non-exist. there would be a couple of rows of the latest hits but never too much. the indie shops were totally different though. but the indie shops never got much love from the labels either. i grew up in canada and the store i worked at got no respect from capitol. sure, we got posters and some odds and ends, but a fraction of what HMV type shops got. and the indie store always pays more for their stock and gets less flexible terms. so that means pretty much cash on delivery for stock. the big stores get at least 30 days to pay. so when a new release comes, they can order 500 and if they sell, they basically use that money to pay the label back. the indie store has to have all the cash in advance. so you can see how the small store is always living life on the edge of the razor where the big store has a bit more cushion.
