Does anyone know the story behind the fact that so many US Carnival sleeves are punched ?
Did this record sell poorly ? (Puch hole could mean discount - no return). Do they all have punch holes ? Or just the majority of those on sale these days ?
Thanks for any insight

My US copy of Carnival doesn't have a punch hole but I was wondering about this for the Brazilian 7" EP of Rio. As far as I know these all have punch holes.
So if I may hijack your question... anybody knows this for the 7" Rio EP as well...

And that Brazilian 7" was never released commercially thus all copies are punched. So, i am curious to hear from other people as well!

I think when a 12" or a 7" are punched it's because it's the last serie pressed. Sometimes it's a small hole in the corner.

My US Carnival copies aren't hole-punched either.

Hole punches are also used when dealing with promos - that is, it's a commercial copy but the barcode or some other part of the item has been marred (with hole punch, lines, cut-outs, etc).

I think when a 12" or a 7" are punched it's because it's the last serie pressed. Sometimes it's a small hole in the corner. that's not technically correct. kind of, but not 100 percent. the hole punch means it was sold by the label as an end of the line, no return/no credit item. (so as neuroticbaby said, it might be the last series pressed, but this is not a guarantee) so the hole/mark is so the record store can't buy it for 2 dollars and then try to return it as regular old stock that didn't sell for 4 dollars. that also applies to foil stamps on the cover of the normal stock/sold in the store copy. to explain more... you own a small record shop. the capitol rep tells you a new ep by duran is coming out and he will put you down for 100 copies with no risk. ie you pay full price (4 bucks each) and then whatever you don't sell, you can send back for credit. a year later the rep comes back and says they have the end of the run of carnival and you can get as many as you want for 2 dollars each but they are hole punched or cut so they know they were sold to you at a discount. so no sneakyness ensues!
