www.ebay.com/itm/Duran-Duran-Collection-just-about-every-LP-12-7-and-CD-released-/121624861446?i wonder what all of you think of that? there's definitely some great pieces, but who would buy a whole collection like that? i guess if you were rich and totally 100% new to collecting duran you might. but i guess that doesn't mean any of us. i have about 95% of the stuff listed and the other stuff is common rare stuff like SOUND OF THUNDER 12 or AVTAK with the nice cover from uruguay. if you were a total noob and you had 20,000 dollars to blow, would you buy a collection like that or would you still want to hunt it down, the old fashioned way?!

Back in the late 80s, whilst i did buy a couple of collections of memorabilia from ex-fans, ~88 there was a collection of records that i was offered that would have almost all been new to me & if i could have gotten the money together (i think it was ~£200-250) then i'd have bought it...
...well, back then, some things were just stupidly expensive - so even the common Japanese 7"s could be £20-25 a pop - & there was so much stuff i needed at very good prices in that, & it would have saved stupid amounts of money longer term. Such is life though.
it's also slightly different now, as back in the day you had to go to record stores & scan through Record Collector as soon as it came out so that you didn't miss out on something uber cool & whatnot - whereas now, if you're building up a collection from scratch via eBay & Discogs & whatnot then does it matter anymore if you get 100 parcels that you've bought from different people or 1 parcel with 100 things in?
(did it lessen anything for you opening the packages of stuff i sent over to you last year figital, having 5/6 parcels rather than loads?
&, with non-D2 stuff, several years back i was really happy buying a load of Something For Kate CD-singles from someone to save money - though i opted to let him keep the few duplicates for free as i got a bargain)
Yeah, just wondering if changing shopping methods perhaps changes things for someone starting a collection?
Anyway, with this specific collection, i've only scanned it & not attempted to add up the value - but if i had money to burn, i might actually half-consider making an offer even now - on the basis of potentially getting a few upgrades/filling the odd gap & flogging the spares on...
...& i guess that's where an established collector 'might' take a chance if the price was right - as i'm sure that, whilst most of us will own 90-95%+ of the stuff, 100% of the stuff we own isn't minty fresh.
Does it then move onto the question about what happens to our respective collections when we die?
Well, a load of poor relatives are going to have to deal with all the stupid Duran stuff we've amassed.

There is a lot in this collection that I really would like to own, but also a lot of things I already own. So I wouldn't bid on this whole lot. If I were starting a collection though and had money to burn...yes, I would buy this in a hearbeat.
I think pocketdemon raises the point as to why this is offered this way. I think the person selling this doesn't want his/her collection getting split up. I really hope that he/she will find a buyer but I'm afraid that he/she will end up needing to sell items separately. And yes, then I will be interested in more than a few items. I have to admit that...

Not sure which bit you're saying that i may have a point on, but obviously my sincere hope wasn't that it's because the collector's died/is dying... ...& the way it's listed then it doesn't immediately appear to be the former imho, as the seller seems to know the main bits of info necessary so that buyers know what they're getting. Yeah, my last bit was just opening the question out somewhat to see if anyone had made any plans? Well, i know i haven't yet, but sensibly should as i've no pretence that i'm anything other than mortal... & it's only another collector who might know that, say, some odd bit of paper is worth 100x more than another one within the masses of stupid Duran stuff i own.

Seller is not dieing or has not died. Let's kill (!!!) that thought immediately! i was just making sure i wasn't being misunderstood again - as i've apparently been typing in tongues the last couple of days. But yeah, let's shuffle that thought off of this mortal coil & on to a far better place - maybe off to a farm where it can run free & happy with all of the other thoughts? As an aside, i always hope that people are selling collections as they want the money for fabulous treats, as it makes me really sad if i find out that it's to pay bills or because something's broken that's expensive to fix.

Yes, it seems to be the story of your life last couple of days.... But for the times i misunderstood you i was probably to blame. Moving on.... I agree, i was in shock seeing this listing (as i know the seller) which made me panic a bit as i have seen it too many times last couple of years fellow-collectors were forced to sell. I really hope a fantastic treat awaits the seller when the listing sells. Again, i'd buy it instantly if i had the funds. Filling the gaps in my collection and upgrade the 'less-than-excellent-condition'-items. Too bad it doesn't include Arcadia items....

There are so many things I do not have, if I were rich,I would totally go for that and once I check my own collection and make sure I have the best copy of everything, I would consider selling off extra pieces or trading them or even giving some as gifts, especially to my younger friends who are just starting a collection. I noticed several things missing from this collection though. They seem to have none of the US albums on CD in longboxes. Only some of the 3" singles. And they have one Rio on Harvest, sealed, so not sure which version. No cassette of Carnival. Anyway, just a few of the things I noticed. Still a GREAT collection and I made a copy of the list for reference.
