Summer 1981, I phoned the store, made sure the record was available, got on the bus and bought me the first 45 rpm by Lio "Amoureux solitaires". She was so cute, and still is at 53, that I had a crush for her.

I listened to my parents record collection for the first eight years of my life. Then my mother would occasionally buy me an Adam Ant single but my first purchase with my own money was 'Rabbit' by Chas and Dave.
My first DD purchase was 'The Reflex' 12" picture disc!

Dougal and The Blue Cat, I was 4 at the time, and pestered my dad for it. With my own money, Duran Duran (1st album) , and dad bought me The Who, Who's Next. Every time I bought an album, he bought me a classic to balance it out.

Like so many others on this thread, Arena on Cassette! I must have been 8 at the time. How many copies of Arena on Cassette did record stores shift to preteens in the mid 80s exactly?!?!?

I used to listen to my Mom’s records when I was young. I remember I would burn You’re the One That I Want from the Grease soundtrack all the time! I would just play it over and over and over. I’m surprised my Mom would even let me use the turntable unsupervised since I must’ve been only around 5 or 6 at the time. I also remember playing the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 45 and looking at the Captain Fantastic album cover and being fascinated and amused by the little pooping figure on the back cover!
I think the first record I got just for me was the Ewok Celebration song as a 45” single from Return of the Jedi! I was around 10.
Then my sister got into Duran Duran in late 1984 and I went along with it (even though I had “discovered” them first when I first watched the Reflex video earlier that year and declared it my favorite song!), so there was no need for me to buy any music myself.
And then after that, I believe I bought the first Crowded House album in 1986 for myself since my sister didn’t like them as much as I did. At that point our music preferences started to split, but we always have common ground with Duran Duran.

When I was a kid I loved this song and insisted my parents buy it for me; so my first record is Hey There Lil' Red Riding Hood by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs

I've been singing that song and people din't believe that it was released as a single. I still listen to the Grease soundtrack and wore the vinyl out.
