At about 8 years old, I saved my allowance and gave it to my parents so they could order a K-tel 3-record set of songs from the 50s called "At The Hop." Next was the first album from the first love of my life, Shaun Cassidy...and I was about 9 years old. Aaahhh...I still love him and have a soft spot in my heart for Shaun, but later Nick Rhodes came along and stole the rest of my heart. LOL

My first ever 7" single I bought as a youngster was 'Love Blonde' by Kim Wilde..absolutely godsmacked by her before that single too...loved the '50's vibe of that single...still do > Im a devoted 80's music lover...the bad and the good...I got it all...
My first tape however , and earlier then Kim's 1983 record, was DD first album that the daughter of my parents UK friends gave to me when we were there for a holiday...changed my life for good
Next purchase was Rio

Mmmm... If you want to talk about 7"s, my first was 9 To 5 by Dolly Parton and my second was Angel of the Morning by Juice Newton. My musical tastes are all over the board!

Oh my, great topic! Way to bring back some memories.
My first 7" was This Ole House by Shakin Stevens. My first album was Prince Charming by Adam and the Ants. I remember getting my mom to take me into Leamington Spa so I could use my pocket money to buy them.

I turned 12 in March of 1983, which, for my money, is about as good a month as there has ever been in pop music. I received $20 from my grandparents, and went down to the local music store-- long since gone-- and blew the whole thing on singles. 10 singles at $1.66 a piece plus tax, IIRC. It's hard to remember exactly which ones I bought, but based on the music that was out then that I was into, I'm almost certain that they would have included "Hungry Like The Wolf" (the US single with the short version on one side and the Night Version on the other), ABC's "The Look Of Love" or "Poison Arrow" (maybe both), Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science", Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen", Naked Eyes' "Always Something There To Remind Me" and After The Fire's version of "Der Kommissar". Other possibilities include the Pretenders' "Back On The Chain Gang" and Prince's "Little Red Corvette".
Yup, March 1983. Pretty damn good month.

My first 7-inch was Girls on Film, and my first album was Parallel Lines by Blondie - my sister immediately "borrowed" it and never gave it back, but she did take me to my first rock concert - Blondie with Duran Duran opening, when I was 11.

I started spinning records at only 3 years old, but the first 7" I actually bought with my own pocket money was Kraftwerk's Die Roboter when I was 6. It took me another 4 years to pay for my first album, Michael Jackson's Thriller, closely followed by SATRT.
