Def Leppard are one band I could never stand. My roommate loves them and dragged me to one of their concerts last year. I went just to have fun with her, but I was really dreading the idea of seeing them live. It didn't help all the redneck drunks around me saying "Hey babe you like those f*g**ts?" referencing my Duran t-shirt. I was all eyes on Phil Collen, he is a great guitarist. After the show we met the band at their tourbus and three of the members were saying how much they liked Duran and they all signed my t-shirt. I still don't like Def Leppard's music, but they are a bunch of nice guys! I have seen several interviews with them and they only have nice things to say about Duran.

Have to say that, at least in their 'glory' period of '83 to '87, Def Leppard were/are a guilty pleasure of mine, both as a listener and as a guitar player. Their classic songs are just plain fun to play. Agree about Collen. He has a good balance between technique and feel/melodic sense. Sure, there are guys who can play circles around him as far as weird scales at 180 mph, but he knows how to make a solo say something while still being able to "rip" pretty well, and most important IMO, he knows how to make his guitar/amp setup sound great. People love to rip on DL, but I can tell you that no matter where my band plays, Rock of Ages gets everyone pumping their fists, and Pour Some Sugar On Me gets every woman in the place out on the dance floor... every time.

Yeah, maybe I sounded a bit harsh about DL. I would see them live again for the hell of it, they are great live. I don't listen to their records ever. I don't have to, they are all over FM radio, the supermarket musichorns and VH1 classic constantly!

Back when I was in college (early 90's), DL would frequently come through town for gigs and the band and their roadies would challenge my school's soccer team for a "friendly". My soccer friends in turn got great seats for the concerts, etc. and said they were great, down to earth guys, and pretty decent soccer players as well.

I don't have to, they are all over FM radio, the supermarket musichorns and VH1 classic constantly! Oh yeah, I completely understand. I don't actually even own any DL...I had a friend in high school that bought all their stuff, even their UK 12" singles (with, in the case of Animal & Pour Some Sugar, well done extended remixes, just like Duran), so I just taped stuff off him, and now have all those same favorite tracks off of youtube or ripped from a guy at work that has their Vault compilation. Like you said, you can hear them anywhere, any time on radio, whether you want to or not!
