As Chic are opening for DD, for some dates, the concept got me thinking and so I thought I’d ask,
In your opinion, which DD song is most closely related or reminiscent of a CHIC song and why?
For those interesting in reading some more, I also thought I’d share aspects of my Duran Duran/CHIC perspective, including CHIC’s effect on DD and my interest in Nile Rogers/CHIC. Also in addition I will include what I remember from both conversations I had with Nile after having the pleasure of meeting him as the avid fan I am. (Just to clarify, I’m no journalist but a fan).
Perhaps make a cuppa or grab your favourite drink and I insist you find your headphones, I’ve attached a CHIC show. (where they play Notorious).
Some of the following Duran Duran/CHIC stuff may be of common knowledge (the last thing I would ever wish is to patronise anyone) yet if? there's something new in it, however small, well then that justifies my couple of hours effort in sharing my thoughts, perspective and experience. I’ll only share what I believe a DD enthusiast might be interested in, and not everything in my head referring to Chic.
Let’s face it, DD idolised Chic, didn’t they, (DDs aim being to blend the sound of Chic & the Sex Pistols) and considering Nile and co are supporting DD in the U.S. it may be a little appropriate that I share, while I pray that the hold-up regarding the announcement of the Aussie PGs tour dates has something to do with the additional scheduling/arranging of this magical double bill DD/CHIC show.
Here we go
In the late 70s CHIC had a monster hit, the fantastic n funky 'Le Freak' which was all over the radio, including the Nile/Bernard produced Diana Ross's 'Upside Down', Sister Sledge's 'We Are Family & He's The Greatest Dancer' etc.
It sounded groovy, care free while up lifting and made this little man of 8 or 9yrs, jump around all over the place thinking he had it all and could do it all, at that !
(The essence of what great music should do I guess). This was also the time of the famous New York Studio54 club at its height.
I believe Le Freak was Atlantic record’s biggest selling single………ever!
Something like only 12 million units.
Circa Chicago 1979 (as soon as CHICs Good Times was released in fact) some banana brain begins the anti-disco movement or Disco Sucks following. This included a deep hatred for the DISCO sound. On one particular night, all such 'followers' gathered to a football stadium and set fire to LP vinyl disco records. It has been termed as Disco Demolition Night, Can you believe it? due to the hype, interest and instant growth of disco music or dance music including the ‘disco’ night club culture. Which certain individuals believed had to be stopped.
Therefore disco as we know it was very much out and had perhaps died by 1980 or had it not?
This particular banana brain’s fear was based on the fact that dance music at the time was taking over the airways and with that a movement against the many popular ethnic bands who were talented, could groove, offering something fresh in the best possible way. Indeed many of them were people of colour, I'm mean come on they do have rhythm don’t they.
Anyway this is something that would never occur in this day and age, quite unimaginable in fact, after all its a form of discrimination in my book.
Let's see now, at the time going ‘disco’ we had the punk band Blondie's (heart of glass&rapture), the Rolling Stones (miss you), KISS (I was made for loving you), Rod Stewarts (Do ya think I'm sexy) and the list goes on and on regarding rock acts influenced by disco releasing disco based grooves.
A total threat for some??? who were only into white bands and only wanting to hear Led Zep’s Stairway, Eagles, Hotel California etc.
Fancy that, a fear that the disco sound would compete with white rock for radio play or the fear popular music was becoming dance like and thereby may become more popular than white rock and with that disco needs to be eradicated from the airways and from people choosing to play it? again, can you believe it? I mean SERIOUSLY? It was what it was at the time.
Might add here, I appreciate (the fellow Brummies) Led Zep too by the way..…and very much so.
The good news is that disco lived and even though Nile R and his team (the chic organisation) were out as a musical force/dance band. In fact the CHIC influence transcended all this and it lived on coz thankfully, the likes of the great Bowie, (may he RIP) our beloved Duran Duran, INXS and Madonna were of the first acts to put him back up there where he belonged, and boy did they do it and boy did it pay off…….BIG TIME !
Prior to working with Bowie in 82 and the Let's Dance albums monumental success, Nile was totally crushed with all the backlash that was the anti-disco movement, believing his and Chic’s contribution to modern music was totally irrelevant.
We all have heard how DD are the 'band designed to make you party' well their feel good 'musicality factor' in my opinion they got from Chic.
You cannot hear CHIC and not feel good ! Just like you cannot hear DD and not feel better for it !
CHICs music like DDs makes one feel good................FULL STOP !
Attached is a link to a full CHIC show from Sydney, of which they played the same set in Adelaide. (But before you watch please keep reading).
FIRSTLY, I'll just warn ya, This Is The BEST Disco Band.............EVER !
and allow me to add this one of the TIGHTEST bands you will ever see, if not THE................Period !
It's a long show to watch and I'm going to recommend (for starters) only 5 tracks you watch (should you not have the time to see the whole show), just to get the feel or vibe or as a sample of what to expect. Also as DD are touring with CHIC it may be an introduction ‘if’ you are not familiar with the chic’s sound.
If it enhances your experience however big or small, well that makes this tread’s/post’s effort worthwhile.
As mentioned I have spoken with Nile on two occasions for some time (a much longer period than I’ve had with any other artist) and he told me some great stuff. The following are aspects of the discussions which I don’t think I’ll ever forget.
If you ever get to meet him, like in a hotel lobby he is charming and with some good thoughtful respectful questioning he is happy to chat. The second time I had the opportunity we talked for approximately 45minutes.
Now, may I just put the brilliance that is Nile Rogers (aside from musical talent) into perspective please.
At the time we spoke the man was 62, the day before in Melbourne he was admitted to hospital for a cancer treatment thing, (as he likes to refer to it) and tonight after performing an amazing blazing 2 hour show, he was sitting with some diehard fan ‘me’ in an impromptu fashion in the Adelaide Hilton lobby, having a chat and its approximately midnight !!! (Just painting a true picture).
People, This man is I N C R E D I B L E !!!
The only way I can describe it is like this. If you love his ‘contribution to music’ (both production and CHIC wise) and express it to him honestly while also thoughtfully, well then he ‘loves’ the fact you do & that you know your stuff and therefore he lives in the moment and is totally engaged. (perhaps this is something he doesn’t get from regular journalists?). That’s all I did, nothing special.
I mean, How many times have we heard DD being interviewed and thought what on earth/what the hell is the journalist asking them and why?
- I asked Nile why doesn't he release a Chic album of Chic songs with the worlds various great bass players considering the bass god Bernard Edwards is no longer with us, e.g. with JT and Flea and his response was it’s a good idea but no one can play bass quite like Bernard did.
- I asked Nile about the Notorious recording sessions and he replied he couldn’t remember much of the inspiration re song specifics (admitting he was much under the influence at the time), but did add he remembered the difficulties and added despite Andy being a great solid guitarist, he is very highly opinionated and added he has a fiery personality. He mentioned he himself would go into the studio and would insist the briefcases regarding letters/legal documents from Andy’s lawyers at the time etc. would packed away and all relevant conversations as such put on hold as the distractions were not a way to create a number one album. It was a troublesome time but he did his best to keep DD together and not lose focus. (I also remember SLB saying once that Nile was the glue that kept them together at the time).
- His relationship with DD is the most unique and closest he’s had with any artist.
- I asked him how he got to work with Bryan Ferry and he said I girlfriend took him to see Roxy Music in London 1975 and from there he got the idea for his chic band. He said RM mixed uniform style, glamour, elegance and art and with that, Chic were to be dressed in ‘chic’ designer suits while even Chic’s first album cover was a nod to RMs LP covers with supermodels on it.
Nile first worked with BF on his 1985 Girls and Boys/Slave To Love and the rest is history.
- Nile introduced the late Lamya (RIP) to DD, circa early 90s DD’s backup singer (remember her incredible performance of come undone from the DD acoustic sessions?) I’m led to believe she was also Nile’s girlfriend at the time.
- Nile and Bernard were once refused entry into Studio54. As it was Grace Jones had invited them to see her performance but forgot to put them on the VIP list. (Err no I didn’t tell Grace off about this when I saw her in Sydney, last May). So Nile and Bernard went home and wrote a song that went something like ‘Ahh F… Studio54, Ahh F… OFF’ and then the next day they reworked it coz it wasn’t top 40 stuff. That particular song in fact became the mighty Le Freak. How about that !
Anyway that’s all I remember from our conversation.
Other CHIC organisation info regarding DD is that our JT now owns the same guitar Bernard recorded Good times with (BE gave it to him) and I'll never forget seeing DD live in 83 and during JTs intro while playing GOF he broke out into the GT bass riff. Despite dancing, cheering amounts thousands of others etc. I heard it. If you listen to DD live from the LA 84 Forum show, you will hear it too as SLB introduces JT.
Our John has also said Chic was the first band where the bass was very evident, (more so than the other instruments) like up front and at that time he got onto CHIC he was influenced to the extent of switching from playing electric guitar to bass guitar.
Good Times is probably the most covered bass line ever, e.g. Queen’s - Another One Bites The Dust, Sugar Hill Gang’s - Rappers Delight, Blondie's - Rapture, Puttin on the Ritz, just to name a few.
Jess (Jessica) Wagner (is DDs new other current backup singer) and was a member of CHIC early 2000-2006
Currently in CHIC, Jerry Barnes plays bass and you should see those fingers go. Don't miss his jam with Nile on Le Freak, Good Times and I Want Your Love etc. in the attached link. Jerry and Nile both jam together stage front it's amazing.
Ralph on drums is one if the best around of not the best. (after RT). He truly is INCREDIBLE, just wait till you see him do Lets Dance and with no ear piece for that matter, it's f'n amazing. I’ll never forget seeing it first played live 5 years ago in this CHIC manner. It’s amazing and now as Douglas has implied it’ll have a different sentimental meaning since David’s passing. So true. Check it out on the link.
As for Kimberly (blond shirt hair) and Folami (brunette) on vocals they are sooooo sweet. They love playing Notorious by the way, however I imagine there will be no need when supporting DD. Check it out too on the link.
Before the show that same afternoon, I had asked them if there was a CHIC after party and they were under the impression there was and promised me they'd find out and let me know the password/code to get in. Later after the show they discovered there wasn't. Too bad there wasn't so we had a drink in the lobby bar instead and spoke about how they got into Chic and I'll would throw in a Nile/DD question every chance I got.
It's such a pity CHIC never released this on DVD format. How I would love to play this in me car.
As it is, that's the only place I get to play stuff LOUD without me head phones on, unless everyone is out of the house that is.
Other things you all probably know, Tony Thompson was the original drummer in CHIC and played with our Power Station. He played on Bowies serious moonlight tour and that’s when AT and JT met him and the power station seeds were sown. In November 83 both DD and DB were touring Australian venues.
Bernard Edwards was one of the world’s best bassists, if not the, he produced Power Station and AVTAK including influencing/developing JT to do what he did on 'Some Like It Hot' which is common knowledge amongst the many faithful I’m sure.
Anyway I won't bore you all any longer so if you haven't got time to watch the whole show, I do insist you watch the following 5 songs as mentioned earlier.
Show starts 14:32, first two songs Everybody Dance and Dance Dance Dance are great too but if you aint got more than half to spare I recommend you watch the following.
I want your love 25:00
Notorious 1:06:50 then 'original sin' follows
Let's dance 1:26:19 then following, watch 'Le freak' and 'Good Times'
During 'Good Times' Nile invites people up on stage to party (he did the same thing in Adelaide) and at one point there's a kid playing air guitar with him. Hmm Is that ‘coolbarn’s little man? Coz I can imagine CBs son being that cool n doing just that.
Be sure to keep watching to see what Nile and Jerry do following that moment. The jam is incredible and to see it live is very much a gift indeed.
CHIC ROCK…………..Period !
Enjoy the link and the pic, which just happens to be an audience pic from one of the Adelaide CHIC shows from 3 years ago. I’m in the front row, (can you see me?, I’m the ultimately incredibly good looking bloke, Lol), who is ‘Going Off’ if you like, coz that’s what I kinda do, it’s a passion thing. I know trying to find me is a bit like Where’s Wally but instead, Where’s aftertherain. Lol
Here’s a hint I’m 4 down from the lovely lady taking a photo.
Like I’ve said before at 30 something years and only 27 quarters, I still can’t control it…..…..my passion that it is.
Lastly, please don’t forget my thread question.
However if you don't wish to answer it, that's okay, simply do something else for me and that is PRAY that DD bring CHIC with them to my town as well as yours. If such a show hasn't been scheduled already.
In your opinion, which DD song is most closely related and reminiscent of a CHIC song and why?
Many thanks for reading guys, hope there was something in it for ya.
