Unlike most on this board, Notorious was the beginning of a prolonged separation between duran duran and myself. I remember the disappointment when I first put it in my tape deck. It was not the album I was hoping for and it drove me further away from pop music to more guitar driven rock. I still listened to it a few times, but as 1986 turned to 1987 duran duran was being replaced in my walkman by tens of other bands that resonated more with me as someone just about to enter my teenage years. To this day, there is very little on the album that I enjoy listening to. I eventually found my way back, but like so many other kids in the late 80s, Notorious was the album that lost us.
Sorry to spoil the party on here, but I feel like the full impact of Notorious should be acknowledge. Yes, for many of you it was a great album, but the truth is duran duran never lost more fans between albums than they did between Arena & Notorious.

Thanks for posting that, diatribein, and thank you for wording it respectfully. You’re right—it’s good to get the full spectrum of how Notorious was received.
I know I’ve mentioned it before here, but the Notorious single did take me by surprise at how different it was than the DD I was expecting. I warmed up to it eventually and I like the album for the most part (I find So Misled and Meet El Prez to be the low point, and LOVE American Science, Vertigo, Proposition and We Need You). I definitely still feel it's one of their best albums, looking at their entire opus.

Very similar experience. HST, I will take a moment and say thank you to Cherry for starting this thread. While, in my mind, this album falls below the middle line in ranking of favorite to least favorite albums, I really appreciated your description and mention of Vertigo. Since I'm aware that my musical tastes tend to fluctuate I will often go back and revisit something if a persuasive review comes along and makes me think about it. Sometimes I change my mind. So, I listened to Vertigo on the way to the dentist's this morning. And it was thoroughly enjoyable. Therefore, I have decided I will spend the day listening to Notorious and reassess my thoughts. I don't think I will ever become friends with the title track because I've already tried and just don't dig on it (nor Pressure Off and for the same reasons). But if there is 1 song that I've overlooked/forgotten about then probably there are others. I'm super glad for this forum and the fans who provide a fresh perspective.

Now comes up with this video is private on YouTube Strange! I started watching/listening to it ca. 4 hours ago... had to pause. Then it wasn't available on dd.com anymore, and the link to soundcloud didn't work. Found the link on youtube, and was able to watch/listen to the rest, and now (I also see that) this clip is private. Strange! Anyone?

Said private on YouTube for me and the SoundCloud link said there were 0 tracks in playlist (but it's about 35 min long) whatever that means. Didn't play though.

The timeline is great indeed. Also amazing to see that they did not have any recording yet as late as mid August, only demos, whilst the first single was released in late October and the album was released in November. Compare that to current days' Duran time. Still it must have been a stressful period knowing that the album was due before Christmas, with both AT not showing up and Nile being late. I will listen to Notorious on vinyl asap again :-) Soundcloud link does not work here either

It said private because they have changed url in the meantime. I noticed they forgot to add the title to the first seconds of the video. Instead of "Duran Duran & Nile Rodgers" there was "Insert title here" or something similar. The correct link is now this one

I will never forget the day, I went to a BROS concert in Ludwigshafen in 1988. Instead of a support act, a DJ came on stage and started his set with notorious. The whole crowd went nuts and I suddenly knew where a lot of DD's fans had disappeared to

Maybe from an album perspective but I hate to disagree with all..their live show was still packing it in..women were STILL throwing their panties..I saw it during their concerts and the screams were still deafening...
