Forgot to give love to We Need You...for me one of their best B sides. Replace Proposition with WNY and...well...

The live tour was simply amazing and the musicianship was better than ever although sad that Roger and Andy didn't continue the journey. This to me was the album they needed to make at the time. I'm glad that they changed up their sound frequently as it added new layers and dimensions to what Duran Duran evolved to.

One thing is for certain, if there is to be any kind of reunion in the future, I hope there is a bridge big enough to build because going on what I've heard there is no chance. I could just hear the anger spilling..could even be blood if they were all together in the same room. Coolbarn your services have been called for. A few months ago you were selling bridges to the band left right and centre! Just make this one extra large, special commission.

Now comes up with this video is private on YouTube Strange! I started watching/listening to it ca. 4 hours ago... had to pause. Then it wasn't available on dd.com anymore, and the link to soundcloud didn't work. Found the link on youtube, and was able to watch/listen to the rest, and now (I also see that) this clip is private. Strange! Anyone? Yes got it on YouTube Some would maybe say it's strange behaviour 😋

Notorious is an album that I have grown increasingly fond of over time. When I first heard the album it was a bit of mixed bag... songs like AS, MOF, HM, Vertigo, WMO, and Proposition were immediately in my bloodstream. Oh yeah I'll throw WNY in that mix. But others like ST, SM, MEP, and even the title track took me a little bit longer (I'm just not naturally wired for that kind of funk). I'm happy to report that I've come to love the entire album... and quite frankly sometimes it's more satisfying when you have to work a little bit to love an album. My strongest memory of this album is that my family took a vacation to Florida where I bought Notorious on "tape" to play on my "walkman". During the week long trip I fell for a local girl. We were both 15 so it was nothing too serious or salacious... (but I swear to that 15 year old version of me) the moon set on her and I remember sitting in the back of the car for that 15 hour road trip home just weeping like a baby and wearing out Matter of Feeling... play, rewind, play, rewind... and I promise every time I hear that song it's like a portal back to that moment in time. m.soundcloud.com/bittersweetmachines/fire-in-the-city

Aww BSM I'm such a sucker for stories like that! Music is like a time machine emotionally. I gotta be honest I sometimes I'd rather not feel like my 15 year old self when listening to certain songs, because I lose my adult perspective on things momentarily. It's so damn powerful. Of course the innocence of it all makes me smile too. Simpler times. So go on, which song of yours did you write about her???

Got my Rega RP1 in the mail today. Broke out my original 1986 copy of Notorious from the attic. Real bonfire in the warmth of the tone. Oh, the memories 😃

And 30 years on, the title track still sounds great live. Agree, it has a very winter sound as an album, particularly the bells on Winter Marches On. My fav track is American Science. I can remember sitting at my desk while writing my PhD thesis (that ages me as older than the rest of you!) rewinding the tape endlessly on this track.

I have vivid memories of picking up the vinyl at the record store. I used to call them a few times a week when a new DD or related release was imminent. When I got home, I immediatly taped the album and played that tape over and over. I also wrote the lyrics down as it was the first Duran album that didn't have a lyric sheet ! All by ear. I remember I had to get used to the new Duran sound. I had become a fan after buying The Reflex 7" / The Wild Boys 12" and then Arena so Notorious was the first Duran album I picked up on release day.

I know this is going to look a bit déjà vu, but this is what I had posted in the thread for the Notorious single but with a bit of editing. This album, for me, was the base starting point for my Duran fandom. A precursor to this was actually the A View To A Kill single as well as the Arcadia and Power Station projects. What sort of sound would we be getting with the new album? It was hard to tell as the side projects. Then came the album which one reviewer had described as "white funk". Nile Rodgers. He was all over the music scene in '85 and '86 doing production work, not just with Duran but with other bands as well.
Notorious is released. When I bought the album, I recorded it on to cassette to listen to in my car. With repeated listens to it in my car, I started to guess what songs might be released as singles as the the album, to me, had some strong tracks. One song in particular that I had a strong feeling about being a single was Meet El Presidente (still one of my favorite singles - I don't know why everyone has a pop at it). Everything for this album from the marketing to the tour was solid. What I remember about the release of this album:
- Getting not just one but two 12" singles for Notorious. I'm more partial to the Latin Rascals mix and really love the sleeve design for this mix. The Japanese "Strange Behaviour" 12" was a must have for the collection (laser etching on the outer rim of the 12"!!). This was Duran's first foray into the market of the double 12", especially in the U.S., as other UK bands had started this trend back around 1984 with releasing a double 12" in the UK.
- The Master Mixes double 12". When I saw this in my local record store I was thrilled! The mixes were right up my alley and made me think that we might get a fourth single off the album (which we didn't, much to my chagrin). The Brazilian 12" for the Master Mixes was a must have for the collection - I've always liked the artwork for that 12". It wouldn't be until a few years later that I discovered that there was a slightly longer version of the Notoriousaurusrex Mix containing a bit of "The Proposition". It makes you wonder if all or most of the songs on the album received some sort of remix treatment.
- Was a bit puzzled, but not put off by, the sleeve design for Meet El Presidente. After getting solid color sleeves for Notorious and Skin Trade, we now got a sleeve with a picture of the band. I was under the impression that they would have kept up a solid color for their next release to match the other two singles. What we got instead was a poster bag 7" (gatefold in the UK). This single also marked the appearance of Duran's first CD single.
- U.S. promo singles in clear / colored vinyl! Shame that there was no promo clear red 12" for Skin Trade and a white vinyl 12" promo for Meet El Presidente to match the promo 7"s. With the recent spate of fan manufactured singles, I'm surprised that no one has taken the mantle on producing them. Hmm. You do have to wonder if there was any consideration to press these up legitimately by Capitol. Anyways, I was fortunate enough to get all three 7"s in one fell swoop at an indie record store.
- The concert. That summer that the tour rolled into town was a great summer....the Lost Boys had come out and I was listening to the soundtrack of that movie over and over. Ok, that has nothing to do with Duran, but I remember listening to it on the way to the concert. Such a great summer....
Other things about this period:
- Only ONE b-side song. Really? Whilst We Need You is a great track, we got an album track as the b-side to the Notorious and Meet El Presidente singles.
- The World book. How many of us here were fortunate enough to buy this book at the concert? I bought one along with the set of buttons when I went to the concert. It wouldn't be until about 25 years or so later that I would get the star medal off of Ebay. Did anyone happen to buy the large subwayish size poster of the three members? I did buy two t-shirts at the concert as well.
- Various single / promo issues. The UK posterbag 7" for Skin Trade. The Italian picture disk 12" of Strange Behaviour. The U.S. promo clear vinyl 12" of Notorious. U.S. / UK promo 12" of Meet El Presidente backed with unreleased mixes (at the time) of Skin Trade. Duran Goes Dutch!
