DD and U2 are probably my two favorite bands of all time. Rattle and Hum and Big Thing were my gateways to pop culture as an 11 year old in 1988.
Yesterday U2 released a new song called The Blackout. Along with The Little Things that Give You Way, which was played live this summer, they represent the first taste of Songs of Experience.
For all the criticism we throw at DD , at least their new material isn't boring. I'm holding out hope for the new album, but based on these songs, it may be yet another U2 album I listen to once and never revisit.
Paper Gods may be too electronic, too modern and at times, too pandering. But unlike U2's output since 2000, it's never dull.

Saw this on a U2 forum yesterday after it premiered... On further listen, the lads made one hell of a Duran Duran tune. Then someone else added... Duran Duran circa 2005, not 85. (To which the original poster replied "Exactly! ") Then the discussions go into the usual people who like it, people in between, and people who are angry that the songs doesn't sound "experimental"/ambient/or whatever other various sounds the band has done over the years (sorry Andre). Makes our discussions of new Duran material look like tea parties, haha.

That video of U2's new song was shot in Amsterdam before their first show this Summer. The son of a friend of mine was chosen to attend the filming and be part of the audience.

Agreed. U2 has become as boring as Bon Jovi and Depeche Mode, with each album being a weaker version of the one before it. You can say what you will about Paper Gods, but Duran Duran continue to evolve and explore and keep things fresh...

I would rather hear a studio version of this song, I believe. And now that trev brought it up, it does seem like they channeled DD.

What it boils down to me is the desire for a More organic album that is the result of real instruments with the synth taking a back seat. You Kill Me With Silence is one of my top 3 songs on PGs; I love it as is but can't help wanting to hear a version done with an orchestral accompaniment, with the synth, in large part, being replaced by strings.
