I just recently travelled to and from NY with a small, sample-size bottle of Listerine (glass bottle, no less) in my bag. Listerine is flammable. Any mouthwash, as far as I know, is flammable. All some nut needs to have is that and a book of matches....dunno how much damage it would do, but it would scare people to death. If you ask me it's all a ploy to make travellers pay the exhorbitant airport prices of water, ammenities, et al. The sad truth is, anything can be smuggled on board with a bit of cleverness. EDIT: While still meditating on the subject, doesn't a bottle of liquor bought at the duty free pose a serious safety threat?

It has really become pain in the ass.. just recently, they took my sister's deodorant and stuff like that and also a friend's cheese and wine which were her gifts to us!.. If you are travelling with your hand luggage you have to buy everything from the duty free otherwise they take it away which also causes a big limit for tourists to shop in the city markets etc.

I travelled last week, the new rules are a bit of a pain in the ass because some items simply don't exist in sizes small enough (ie contact lens solution, I went crazy trying to find a bottle that was 100ml or less, the smallest I've found was 120ml, I couldn't get any samples so I ended up having to check in my suitcase so that I could bring the full size bottle with me) and then I forgot a small bottle of eye drops OUTSIDE the little plastic bag that's allowed in the hand luggage, and one of those bottles with that gel for sanitizing hands, AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE IT! And speaking of airport security, you know when you are boarding the plane, if you have to walk to the aircraft, at smaller airports, there are usually airline and airport employees standing between the building and the aircraft, telling you what way to walk (and making it impossible for you to walk around freely). Well, there wasn't anyone on my way back. Someone could have easily walked away, and hid somewhere, done some damage etc.

I seriously hate to fly and always have. I am a white knuckler the whole time and it just scares the pants off me. I long for the day when we no longer have to worry about being blown up. Fear of flying and crashing is enough for me, lol. I'm such a wuss that way. But sadly, with terrorism going to new levels, I don't think that day will really come again. ps- have a safe flight Iami. I am sure you will.

And to add for the fun, last time my hubby and I flew (when we moved to Australia from New York a few months ago), he had no liquid-type things that he needed in his carry-on luggage, and I had tons of stuff, so I packed TWO ziploc bags full of liquids/gels/lotions, etc., with the notion being that one was mine and one was his, and that if security caught us, I would just allocate one to him (since each traveler gets one) and have him put it in his bag. Suffice it to say that no one said a peep about my two bags of liquids either at Newark Airport (from which one of the 9/11 planes took off) OR at LAX. So yeah, these rules really are a joke!

wow, i'm really surprised that so many of the "major" airports in the US are lax in the security. my only dealings have been with denver DIA and they are always thorough - i had some hand lotion in my purse back at christmas and they flagged it, gave me a ziploc bag for it and let me go on. but i wasn't even flying! i had a gate pass to take my daughter to her plane, flying unaccompanied minor.
i used to *always* get flagged for my spare lighter hiding in the bottom of my purse somewhere or in a side pocket -- had to toss several brand new lighters in the trash! now that one i remember when i park the car, i take the spare out of my bag.
i haven't actually flown myself since july '05 (for DD even) but keeping up with all the security rules is certainly a pain. i agree though - it's pretty obvious that if someone *wants* to get something on a plane, they will find a way. it's just not as "easy" now as it was in the past. but i look at life each day as taking a chance - you never know when or where and you can't live your life in fear.

What about someone putting something into their check ons? It's never gonna be safe. We just have to deal. You either air travel or you don't. That's the only way to make yourself "safe".

I agree fully with you Denise. The only way to truly be safe now that terrorism has taken this route, is to not travel. If you are going to, then you just need to do your best to comply with the rules (and I am all for whatever rules they need to try to keep me safer) and just go and try not to worry.
Air travel has changed forever and we just need to suck it up and deal. Sadly.

Like it's been said before, I think the restrictions seem to be different at every airport.

I wonder that since now you need a passport to get back in the US from ANY country will this be enforced? I know to and from Canada last year via Detroit and Niagara Falls, the ONLY border guard out of four that cared to even see my passport was the US one in NY. Never understood that at all.
