Tons of concrete collapsed and there were injuries, authorities said. Survivors were being carried up the riverbank.
Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that weren't completely submerged.
The entire span of the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed about 6:05 p.m. where the freeway crosses the river near University Avenue in Minneapolis.

No problem, it just happened a couple hours ago, so the story's still unfolding.
3 confirmed dead. I'm amazed it's not more, since it happened at the tail end of rush hour.

Wow, this is awful. I'm watching CNN and looking at all the crunched cars, and they're saying at least 50 cars went into the water. I think that death toll is going to rise, unfortunately.

this is only ten mins. from where I live. What a mess!!!! My heart goes out to the families that lost loved ones.

I called my Mom tonight, and she mentioned that my Dad called her not too long before and said he had went over that bridge just 20 minutes or so before it collapsed (he works in the Twin Cities).
sad what happened either way though...

Looks like the toll's up to 9 now. Terrible as this is, I'm honestly surprised it wasn't worse, being a major interstate at the tail end of rush hour in the height of tourist season. Now the question becomes How could this have happened? We're getting reports of a construction related accident, as awful as that looks, it would have to have been a pretty badly botched job. I hope this doesn't turn out to be one of those cutting-corners-to-save-a-few-bucks deals.
I've always been terrified of bridges for this very reason. Some of the ones around here really creep me out.

Our radio is rumoring that it was caused because of the years of salt being sprayed on the bridge since it had auto de-icers.
A terrible situation regardless of how it happened.
(So glad your Dad was ok TrevGreg)
