this is so sad....
but i think the Transit Authority and those that do the inspections on the bridges goofed on this. i had the news on this morning and saw the story... this particular bridge has been inspected quite a few times within the past 2 years (and it was also inspected back in 2001). they did find "structural flaws" in the bridge, but those flaws did not warrant any kind of repairs or rebuilds for the bridge....
i'm thinking they're gonna backtrack and say they should have fixed the bridge when they spotted signs of said flaws.... IMHO, they SHOULD HAVE FIXED IT when they found those flaws! and i'm gonna guess that the families of those who've lost loved ones due to this "accident" are going to be thinking the same thing.

Our radio is rumoring that it was caused because of the years of salt being sprayed on the bridge since it had auto de-icers. A terrible situation regardless of how it happened. (So glad your Dad was ok TrevGreg) Interesting hypothesis for sure. There's lots of chemicals besides salt that are embedded in the de-icers that are used in MN because the winters are so cold (often -20F). Together with the extremes of summer heat (often +90F), the effect on concrete and steel could easily be massive. iami (who can't believe they're now reporting only 4 dead. It'll be a true miracle if the toll doesn't rise above 10).

I saw the terrifying news yesterday. Apparently the bridge was down to just a few lanes due to construction which is why the death toll maybe lower. My heart goes out the victims.
Edit: not to take away from the tragedy that happened yesterday but it reminds me of the horrific bridge accident in St. Peterburg, 1980. A freighter or large ship hit the side collapsing a section of the Skyway bridge. A Greyhound bus fell off the bridge. I never forgot that event.

Wasn't there also a similar accident in Oklahoma about 5 years ago. Ironically I was driving through Minneapolis & probably that very bridge when I heard that news.

starry: I was in a greyhound bus crossing that bridge the day before the st. petersburg incident, so i remember it clearly as well. i've since crossed the W35 on several occasions. this is why i hate bridges. anyway, this is an infrastructural and human tragedy. very sad.

Oh, man. That is so scary. The things we tend to take for granted in this world.
My condolences to the families of those lost in this tragedy, and wishes for fast recoveries to those that survived it.

The saddest story I've heard from this was the man who used the cell phone of one of the rescue workers to call his family and say good-bye. He died a few minutes later. I can't imagine getting a call from a loved one like that. My commute to work is in the middle of rush hour and I'm often stopped on a bridge going over the Missouri River. Many times I think, "What would I do if this bridge were to collapse and I fell into the water?" It's scary to think about it.

Some of those bridges over the Mo are pretty damn scary looking. I cross the I-35 (the blue one) bridge alot but try to avoid the rest.
