The album was a preordained disaster and deserved its critical drubbing. It was really hard to defend my Duran fandom to other teenagers in 1995 following its release.
An EP in 1994 with the covers that actually made sense (Success, Diamond Dogs or Rebel Rebel, Perfect Day, Detectives, Higher, Needle) would have been ideal. An EP would have spared them some of the vitriol from the press, hopefully prevented Taylor from leaving and tied fans over until a proper album in 1996.
Now knowing that most of this era was label mandated at least clarifies the lack of enthusiasm on the part of the band themselves.
At least we got White Lines out of it. I don't care what the critics say..their version slaps.

I think it's the fact that they dared to touch certain sacred cows that they got such a backlash from the press. Were their cover versions perfect? No. Were they horrible? No. Were some of the song choices questionable? Yes. How many bands do you know of that put out an album of covers and got raked over the coals for it?

Still after so many years I love this album. At the time of its inception, it sounded to me a bit like Oasis and independent bands. I appreciate the selection of songs that were not hits, which shows that the album was not made for commercial purposes only. They all did a great job of playing the songs, sounding like they wrote them, not just taking them to beatbox like most bands did at the time. Tailored them to their own image, giving them a seal of originality. It is a shame that the album has not been recognized not only by critics but also by most fans. Just that many people thought that Perfect Day was the original song of Duran Duran is proof that it's not just an ordinary album of covers and that they weren't just going to bail out financial capital only. I'm sure time will appreciate it.

I loved Thank you 25 years ago. I still love it today. I think Perfect Day, in particular, is beautiful, much more beautiful than the original. Do I care if 99% of the population hate it? No, I don’t.

Thanks for posting, interesting read. I love the production and sound of the album, but for me the song selection was a massive let down after TWA. They had such a shot at real credibility as songwriters after TWA. It’s amazing the band are still around after the mauling they received. They’ll never be allowed to forget Thank You though, as this article proves. For fans wanting DD to get the dues we feel they may deserve ,e.g the RRHOF, Thank You is one of the reasons that is a hard sell, unfortunately. It’s a testament to DD that decades later they still had top 10 records both sides of the Atlantic.
