I just got back from seeing "Hippiefest" and it was truly amazing. Crispin, you should have gone. Colin Blunstone completely blew my mind.
The bill for Hippiefest is Denny Laine, Badfinger, Country Joe MacDonald, Felix Cavaliere (The Rascals), The Zombies, The Turtles, and Mountain.
I have never been to one of these shows before and had every single act be so spot on. Actually, I left before Mountain so we could beat the traffic. The Zombies, Badfinger, and The Turtles on the same bill was incredible for me. Those are probably 3 of my absolute favorite sixties bands. Badfinger sounded great even without Peter Hamm. I've seen The Turtles before (Flo and Eddie) and as always, they are the biggest goof balls out there and I love them. Howard Kaylan's voice is incredible. But The Zombies -- one of the most underrated bands ever simply floored me. They did their biggest hits of course (She's Not There, Tell Her No, Time of the Season, I Love You, Sticks and Stones) and they also broke free of "Hippiefest" and performed Hold Your Head Up. Like I said, Colin was simply amazing.
I know this show has been touring around the US, but if you still have a chance to see it and like sixties pop, you should really go.
Oh by the way, I saw it at Bethel Woods, the new amphitheater on the site of the original Woodstock on Yasgur's Farm and it made seeing Country Joe MacDonald a real trip. Hearing I feel Like I'm Fixin To Die Rag on the same site he performed it in 1969 was really special.
