My son's public school has quiet lunches as well. They play classical music for them while they eat. He hates it. He inhales his lunch and runs outside. Well in my daughter's school they can talk but obviously if they get TOO loud they are going to be told to quiet it down a bit. I was a lunch room aide the past couple of years and the kids would get a little loud at times but they ARE kids after all. It seems like kids are just not allowed to BE kids anymore. It's sad.

And! Don't walk you may trip! And! Don't laugh you may give yourself a hernia! And! Don't breath you may take in some carbon dioxide!

The lunch lines were long. If you bought lunch sometimes you didn't get to finish. I hated that. So true so true, It was easier to get a soda and bag of chips from the vending machines. I finally ate a healthier lunch when I was allowed off campus for lunch as a Senior.

I don't know how it is at everyone else's school, but back in the day, my teachers (until middle and high school) ate at the table with children, for safety. They had planning period, I suppose, while we were in PE/art/music to vent.
The school my girls go to have a few 'lunch room monitors' wandering around, mainly telling the kids to sit down and hush.

Yet another example of lunacy...... ...staff members cannot hear a child choking. If a child is choking, it is likely s/he wouldn't be making much noise, right? Instead of making the kids be quiet, perhaps the staff should be more attentive to the goings on in the cafeteria? If my son had to be quiet at lunch I think he'd be at greater risk of choking because he'd literally shovel all his food in his mouth so he could get out to the playground sooner.

I agree lunch time is a time to be social.
The article did say they can whisper.

My Goddaughter goes to a Catholic school and they have to be silent except at lunch and when school is over all she does is talk about everything. She bounces off the walls with energy.I can't image what it would be like if she couldn't release some of her energy at lunch.I love her but I can't keep up with her.

I was wondering what the kids were choking on in the first place.
