Some of these polls were hijacked by fans. Whilst John is a fantastic bassist and does indeed receive respect from a lot bassists, he is not the best. He’s not in Bernard Edwards league neither that of Jaco Pastorius or James Jameson. nobody officially said he's the best. just because some fans think it. maybe other fans aren't as vocal about the people they like. that link is from 2013. later -1

He may not be as great as those you mentioned, but I definitely think John is better than Flea..Flea sounds the same in every song. He doesn't take it to another level like John..each new duran albums sounds fresh and different than the last..I don't hear that in new RHCP album...same old same.. Clearly, John is very underrated.. and his idol was Bernard Edwards..

Far better bass players than John but he’s the best musician in the band by a mile.

JT may not be in the same league however he’s been doing his creative thing in his own way in the same band for 40 + years JT is no session player playing another bass players bass parts and that irrespective of not being the worlds best, this makes him way more unique and in a different league umm different, in its own right that’s my opinion anyway another way of looking at it is that most of the worlds “best bass players” are session players these days and haven’t been in a band creating their “own” bass part creations for 40 + but rather play another artist bass parts and have an audience still interested in seeing them specifically with their band

My point is that it was hijacked by fans. I remember when that poll came out and some Duran forum posters were pushing it. It made us look needy.

It's not about "bass players", it's about "bass lines" inside songs

He's fine as a bass player. I think, we don't really hear his best playing as it likely happens when he's playing in more intimate settings (ie, home, with friends, etc.) But what I hear is good so that's what I care about.
All that said, the article's only talking about the bassline and not the person. The basslines are being discussed, not the bass players.
