Sadly this is alot more common than people realize, and in some countries families are actually rewarded for this.
Read the Princess trilogy by Jean Sasson & Princess Sultana of Saudi Arabia. Appalling doesn't even begin to cover the abuses many women suffer in those countries.

[quote author=goldengun board=general thread=1169744077 post=1169744077 But attempts to introduce harsher sentences have been blocked by conservative lawmakers who argue that tougher penalties would lead to promiscuity. *headdesk*[/quote] Not justifying this at all, but there are people in the US who think that anything will lead to promiscuity. It was in the news around here that certain religious groups were trying to block having girls vaccinated for HPV. Because it would lead to promiscuity.

I would just like to say that family honour punishings (and sometimes killings) still occur at times also in non-Middle Eastern/Muslim countries. There may not be laws protecting it, but the existing ones are not reinforced enough to punish those who do this things.

Me, too.
Maybe it's like in--was it called A Thousand And One Nights, Scheherazade's tales about the king who killed the virgin brides once he'd had his way with them?

That is so sad. He has his so called honour after signing a paper offering she would not be harmed.
Not all Muslims believe this is an honour thing either. Three muslim familys I knew Florida do not practices the same beliefs that they do in the middle east. Its like there are christians but each sect practices in a different way.

Actually, my first job was given to me (it's so cliche', but true) by a man who happened to be Muslim and owned a Dairy Queen franchise with his brother and his wife.
And they were less strict with their daughter than my parents were with me.....
And the women.......Mustak's (my boss--his brother's name was Hassan; Hassan would try to cuss in English, and it was funny as hell. We'd correct him. He could cuss like a sailor when we were finished with him....) Anyway--their wives told THEM what was up. There was never any doubt who was in charge around there--it was the women.

WHAT THE f___?!?! What happened to the other side of the equation? Men have to transmit it, although they don't get cervical cancer because...duh...they don't have a CERVIX!
See, this whole thing about HPV being a sexually transmitted disease is gonna throw cervical cancer in the closet. "Oh, you have cervical cancer? Well, you must have been slut!."
I'm NOT saying that the truth about HPV transmission should be swept under the rug, but when religious groups would rather have a girl risk getting HPV and potentially have cervical cancer develop than to protect her, sex be damned, I wanna puke.

Lots of cultures have their conceptions about virginity. There are cultures in Africa , where it is believed that one could cleanse himself of HIV, or other STDs, by having sex with virgins, because she would be "pure and clean". Unfortunatly such practices result in the death of many girls and women.
