To me, it's a perfectly pleasant and acceptable B-side-- something that's good enough for release, but would have felt out of place on the album. I always liked it. It has such a sweet sentiment to it, and I always thought of it as a thinly-veiled love letter to their fans. I also admire its stripped-down quality. It's about the furthest thing from over-produced that they've ever done. I wouldn't necessarily call it one of my all-time favorites, but I've got nothing negative to say about it, honestly.
Also, it was nice surprise to get a non-album B-side after the first single from the album had an album track as a B-side. When the 'Notorious' single came out, I fell in love with 'Winter Marches On', but when that turned out to be on the album, I kind of figured, "Oh well, I guess they didn't finish up any songs that didn't make it onto the album."

It's a nice, sincere song and an appropriate b-side. SLB channels John Lennon a bit when he sings 'We could bring you gently 'round". It also hints at the some of the sophisticated, languid sounds of Big Thing (Palomino, Too Late Marlene).

We Need You is one of my favorite DD b-sides. It's so powerful in its simplicity. As a matter of fact, it's the b-side that made me realize how amazing b-sides could be. I never paid attention before that track and I don't think I was even aware that bands would put non-album tracks on the b-sides of their singles. This one sent me down a never-ending rabbit hole looking for non-album tracks for my favorite bands.

I wonder if this song was partially about Roger leaving? ( I could be totally off) Or if Simon ever confirmed the meaning.

I've always thought it was directed towards Andy Taylor, perhaps written during that time when there was still hope that Andy would return to the fold, with a recognition that he would be key in the songwriting for the new album. Did Andy ever have a thing for pointed shoes though?

Dreadful? I just can't believe the nerve and audacity. Duran Duran have released a few dreadful songs here and there over the years. We Need You is not one of them. I thought I had said my peace on this with my original post but this "article" has gotten under my skin. This song does not deserve the hatred from this word salad dump by C.K. Whatever. Makes me question having ever liked that fanzine.

I seem to recall the song being about Yasmin, Julie Anne, and Renee.

I seem to recall the song being about Yasmin, Julie Anne, and Renee. You know that could be true why the following LP BT was the first to thank the partners in the credits you could be onto something

This song does not deserve the hatred from this word salad dump by C.K. Whatever. Makes me question having ever liked that fanzine. The article is from a while back by a dedicated fan who posts here (but not at all lately). He writes a lot of satirical stuff, but this seems “serious.” It’s purely opinion, and everyone’s entitled to one, but from reading the article it seems he doesn’t care for the song mainly because it’s so different to the Notorious album. I personally like the song, but besides only involving the three members from that time, it doesn’t share much DNA with the other music from that era.
