I am very happy.
I cannot say that I now believe all these awards aren't political. But in all the politics, sometimes a good decision is made.
I thought this would go to Babel, because it had WAAAAY more SAG contracts. I was happy to be wrong. Perhaps Little Miss Sunshine won because of it's strong LA connection.
Anyway - the SAG actor awards - Mirren, Hudson, Whitaker, Murphy - all went the way the Globes went and the way I still swear the Oscars are going to go. Anyone want to change their predictions?

I would be very surprised if this movie wins the Oscar. Very few comedies win. I still go with Mirren and Hudson for Oscars. I predicted these. I was torn between Whitaker and DiCaprio for Best Actor. I am convinced that Whitaker will win the Oscar. I am wondering if Murphy will in fact win. I see he won a Golden Globe too.

Of the 5800 or so Oscar voters, nearly half are actors, meaning they are also SAG members. Another 30% are producers. The producers gave it to Little Miss Sunshine. So, you have to two largest Oscar voting blocks giving the SAG and PGA to Sunshine.
It was previously a thimbly race between Babel and The Departed. I think Little Miss Sunshine killed Babel at the Oscars by winning SAG and PGA. I also think Hollywood wants to give a feel-good award out to up it's previously falling numbers and the disassociation of these awards with the box office. It's not able to do that with Dreamgirls. I now think The Departed may have an upset in Sunshine. Doesn't bother me, as long as Marty gets his award. I thought both films were outstanding. I kinda would like Sunshine to win so that the whole "comedies don't win" would have another stickler - (BTW, Shakespeare in Love was considered a romantic comedy.)
Also, an interesting side note - what Little Miss Sunshine says about our American need to be the best - to win! I love that Greg Kinnear's character is throwing his family into bankruptcy and poverty trying to get rich on a self-helf program and book! That's hilariously ironic. I also love how he tries to push his daughter to win. And then Carrell's character takes such pride in being the "preeminent Proust scholar" - the irony was that Proust was a loser by most standards with only one famous book that is now famous after his death. And Paul Dano's NEED to be a test pilot! These are socialogical threads here so many people have not mentioned.
Which doesn't make it any less of a lovely comedy.
I just think that it's comment about "winner vs. loser" mentality is a lot stronger than people always see. I love what it says about the glory of being a loser. I also love that first realization Kinnear and the rest of the family has about the other child beauty contestants! That is one of the funniest moments in film I have seen in a long time!
EDIT - Oh, and on the comedy front - Chicago was a musical comedy and a satire - all the things that shouldn't win...
