Haven't seen "you have exceeded your daily limit", though I have seen the users list with 0 Members, 0 Guests and 0 Invisible Users when I've been logged in.
I immediately thought of the hamster too.
Edit: D'oh. Now I see it.

As the hitcounter is on a 'basic' level , ie a free one, it only goes to 20,000 hits a day. This has been one of the busiest days since the forum started.
