From my LiveJournal: "On Sunday we went to see Beowulf in 3D. What can I say about that? It was pretty - very pretty. The effects were neat and the 3D was much better than I expected. However... the character developement was just horrible. I really didn't care about any of them except maybe Beowulf's red-headed side kick but I think it's because I like the actor that played him. The story was okay. I know it's based on an Old English heroic epic poem about Germanic pagans but a lot of it seems like King Arthur legends rehashed. I guess just about every legend and tale back then took from one another anyway. Beowulf has a magickal sword (like Excalibur), there is a golden drinking goblet that is important (like the Holy Grail), Beowulf begets a son by shady means and that son (who is gold for some reason) comes back many years later to do battle with him and they destroy each other (like King Arthur and his son Mordred... who dressed in gold armour), love in the court between the golden haired queen and Beowulf who is a hero (like Gwenyfar and Lancelot), etc. etc. etc. Hunter expressed interest in seeing Beowulf and Enchanted. I wanted to see Beowulf first to see if Hunter can see it. I don't mind if he does even though the first villian, Grendel, is pretty creepy and gross. If he sees it, though, Vin will take him because I'm not interested in seeing it again yet. I'll take him to see Enchanted "

Yeah I thought the storyline was a bit bland.. But considering it was based on a poem, I thought it went ok.. Needed more of a middle story.
I also thought Grendel was really creepy and gross looking too.

I thought it was a semi-artfully rendered, completely joyless abomination.
