I've just done a pair of stories about ancient megaliths in New York, and I got to reference Stonehenge and Newgrange (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newgrange) in Ireland, which is even older.

It's fascinating stuff, and it can really knock the shit out of accepted history that we've just been in a steady incline of technological advancement.

Just to show you that ancient sites like this are everywhere, here's one of the stories I did for last week's Kingston Times. The guy I interviewed might sound a little kooky at times, but he was pretty interesting all the same.

While a megalithic rock formation at Kingston Business Park was deemed historic enough to keep intact prior to the start of development, the origins of the site are still something of a mystery.

The cluster of huge limestone slabs became the subject of debate five years ago, when a survey team representing the New York Old Growth Forest Association happened across it while scouting the Delaware Forest, a portion of which was going to be cleared out for the industrial park.

“Our mission is to locate, document and protect the surviving remnants of ancient forests in New York State,” said naturalist David Yarrow, a member of the New York Old Growth Forest Association.

On June 17, 2002, the survey team, led by arborist Fred Breglia of Landis Arboretum in Esperance, spotted what Yarrow described as “some pretty significant big, old oak trees, but not a whole lot else” on the site, but they also found a partially obscured collection of mysterious boulders on the western edge of the then-proposed development.

“We were walking through the woods, and I saw this pile of stone hidden, by among other things, poison ivy vines,” said Yarrow. “It struck me that it was something that was out of place. It’s not a natural feature. It’s clearly some type of placement that’s occurred there.”

At first, the team thought the cluster of rocks might have been a glacial erratic, deposited in the location more than 10,000 years ago by a glacier. Further inspection, however, led Yarrow to believe the formation was not an act of nature.

“It’s clear to me that it’s a man-made structure,” said Yarrow.

A dolmen is a megalithic rock formation comprised of two or more vertical stones with a larger stone resting on the top. The largest dolmen in North America is located roughly an hour from Kingston, in the town of North Salem in Westchester County. Simply known as the Balanced Rock, North Salem’s famous landmark’s origin has been speculated as being everything from a glacial erratic to a man-made tribute to an ancient king.

Though the notion of it being a glacial erratic appears to have been officially discounted, the origin of the dolmen in Kingston Business Park is still unclear. The City of Kingston acknowledges the rock formation is likely man made, asserting in an environmental impact study performed on the site concluded that it was a Neolithic-era stone shelter. Yarrow disagrees, placing the date as much as 7,000 years closer to the modern era.

“I’m virtually certain that it’s a site that was actually erected on that ridge top 3,000 years ago,” said Yarrow. “Their assessment of that stone pile was that it was a stone shelter, and my response is, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ Why would Neolithic people drag 10 to 20 ton boulders on the highest point of a rocky ridge like that just to make a shelter so they could sit there and chip rocks into arrows? I don’t think so. I couldn’t believe that an educated archaeologist would even consider such a hypothesis. But that was the official word on it.”

Yarrow is a dowser, a term most generally associated with the ancient use of divining rods to find underground currents of water.

“Dowsing has a lot of other applications, and one of them is to study what is called the magnetic matrix, or the energy grid that runs across the land in different sorts of patterns,” said Yarrow. “There are magnetic flux flows all across the landscape, and not surprisingly they connect high points of the land, like ridge tops, with low points of the land, usually where you find significant water bodies. The land is actually woven together by this subtle magnetic network. Through dowsing, just like we can trace water, we can trace these magnetic channels.”

The dolmen in Kingston Business Park isn’t a stone shelter at all, said Yarrow. It’s a magnetic hotspot.

“That dolmen happens to be sitting as a bulls-eye right where three of these major magnetic flux channels are crossing,” said Yarrow. “I’m 100 percent that some group of human beings deliberately put that stone structure at that exact point for that reason. That stone structure is put at an energy vortex in the landscape.”

“The Earth can be understood as the orderly material manifestation of extremely low frequency (ELF) energy waves,” said the survey team’s report. “Within this geometric grid, each low frequency, long wave energy has certain points of zero energy or null vibration. At certain points, the zero-sum point of one energy waves coincides with zero-sum moments of other waves. This creates a special null point in the grid—a spot which is empty and inactive. Ancient people seemed to know how to locate these empty places in the matrix or grid. And they erected stones or constructed earth mounds at these special nodes. These ancients had a technology to affect the energy matrix of the landscape.”

“An analogy from modern technology (is) microwave towers in the telecommunications grid for long distance transmission of telephone, television and computer signals,” said the survey team’s report. “These microwave towers are positioned at the high points to intercept beams of high frequency, short wave energy. The signals is boosted by a microwave amplifier, and then beamed to the next tower in the sequence. Ancient megalithic constructions functioned in a similar fashion, only they are tuned to ELF, long wave energies. To intercept these long waves of earth energy, the devices must be positioned at the nodes or null points of the energy matrix.”

While Yarrow and the City of Kingston disagree about the dolmen’s origin, the rock formation was deemed historically important enough that it remains intact, even as much of the surrounding area was cleared to make room for Kingston Business Park.

“There’s quite a few of these things scattered all around the northeast, and they’re enigmas that have not been successfully resolved as to what their function is, or who put them there, or why they put them there, or when they put them there,” said Yarrow. “These are all unanswered questions.”

Yarrow’s interest in ancient forest preservation goes beyond linking the present to the past. He’s also interested in the future as well.

“I’ve been looking at this situation for a long time as a naturalist,” said Yarrow, who published a paper predicting global warming in 1975. “It is the soil and the trees that are the primary mechanism on the planet for regulating the atmosphere and the moisture in the atmosphere of our planet. If we want to do anything about global warming and mitigate climate change, the first thing we have to do is start regenerating instead of destroying our forests.”

“I’ve been doing this ancient forest survey stuff not because I’m sentimental about the task, but because I think that they will be critical for our survival in the future,” said Yarrow. “I’m concerned about our relationship with nature.”
