I remember being in Paris in the late 1990s, in a Metro station waiting on the platform for a train. A recorded message came over the PA system annoucing that smoking was prohibited everywhere in the station. A group of men, standing a short distance away from me, heard the message - and responded by laughing, reaching for their smokes, and lighting up! I can definitely see that. I've had experiences of my own among those lines, but none so extreme (or humorous). The things that might get people to follow the law are sanctions against the business owners who permit smoking in their establishments. There's even a hotline around here where people can call to report infractions. Though I know of at least one local bar owner who wanted to take up a collection to pay for the fines that would be levied upon him to allow his patrons to smoke.

I think it's crazy not to allow smoking in a bar (that law just passed here). Not like the place is full of health nuts. It's ok for them to to drink themselves into oblivion but don't come near them with a cigarette.

Serving appetizers in a bar doesn't qualify as a "restaurant."

I only smoke when I am on fire. Iam allergic to ciggy smoke but I wouldn't want to remove someone elses right to smoke. (because we need more natural selection)

I hate cigarette smoke and am glad to see that they are trying to pass that law in France. Nobody thought it would work in New York, but it did and people are healthier for it. I remember those days when I would go into a bar and come home and have to shower and wash my clothes before going to bed. The stink of the smoke coming off me in the shower is enough to make me want to vomit.

I have asthma and smoke makes me have attacks. I would never tell some one not to smoke its their health not mine.
I havent been to a place in a long time that actually allows smoking.
If smokers say its their right being taken away then where is the right of those who dont want to inhale the toxins?
How ever if a place I went to allowed smoking I just would not go to it. If some one is walking in front of me and smoking, I get in front of them or walk up wind of the wind direction.

If smokers say its their right being taken away then where is the right of those who dont want to inhale the toxins? Exactly!!! That's what I'm saying. Smokers seem to have more rights than non-smokers when it comes to restaurants and stuff. Its either, go out to eat and still smell and inhale smoke or not go out to eat at all (because as of right now, almost every restaurant allows smoking). It's kind of like, inconvenience the non-smokers so the smokers can be satisfied. Again, I'm just saying this when it comes to restaurants. Bars and clubs are a different atmosphere and as marchmadness put it, it's not like the place is full of health nuts!! ;D

They are trying to pass a no smoking ban in public places, bars, restaurants, etc. statewide here in Texas. I'm not a smoker, but I think this is a little too extreme. We already have a citywide ban here in Austin.
