Well, I tell you, here in Orlando, because of Good Ol' American suburban sprawl and a shitty public transportation system, you have to do a few tricks to save gas. Starry can back me up on this.
Here a few things I do:
1) Get my car tuned up - this gains me 2 to 3 miles more per gallon or 36 more miles per tank!
2) I live downtown with a bunch of great neighbors in my condo and a huge parking lot nearby, so I also:
- Always arrange for group trips to be car-pools - even to movie theatres and such
- Check with the neighbors and arrange our store-going or mall-trips together (this is also fun)
- Walk to and from bars and restaurants downtown (this also saves on the frustration of finding parking and avoids any miniscule, small possible chance that I'll drink and then get behind a wheel)
- Plan events at my place (saves on gas and restaurant/bar fees).
- Avoid rush hour, where sitting in traffic eats up gas
Also, I set my mileage gauge every week. I know I have to drive about a hundred miles a week for work. I make a bet with myself to only drive 50 more or less per week. For weeks I do good, I bank up and save the "extra mileage" for longer trips, i have a little notebook in my car. It's like a game - I have 348 miles I can splurge on right now.
Just an FYI: The average American drives 13,500 to 14,000 a year - I commit to driving less than 60% of that.
- I save about $1000 in gas a year
- I lower my insurance by $168
- With regular tune-ups and oil changes, the average car lifespan gets extended by almost seven years
I am serious about this - my car still has 4 1/2 years at least in it - and in the meantime, all the money I am saving is going for a hybrid.
