I think for the sake of the DD legacy, the guitar parts need to sound like Andy. Its a trademark of the band's sound and abandoning that (ala RCM) is a disappointment to fans and has negative repercussions...

They need to get back to doing what they do best, Sex Pistols meet Chic. Guitars need to be mixed up, not down. I was recording some covers of DD songs and I really forgot how crunchy and powerful Andy's (81-83). John's bass lines were much smoother too. I think it should be more of an indie direction. I mean they have partly influenced the whole indie, along with Joy Division, The Cure, U2 and other early New Wave stuff. A heavier feel is just what the doc ordered in my opinion. Any one else who went to a live show can attest to the fact that the heavier songs (White Lines, RCM, GOF, Wild Boys, etc.) dealt a very nice punch in the set. They need to keep an eye on Franz Ferdinand's new album. Its said to feature alot more synths and have a more new wave/dance feel. I certainly can't wait for it and what I anticipate more than that is NEW DD! EDIT: here's Franz's new single.

An indie/cult direction is the ultimate "cool" way for them to go. Right now, they're not considered very cool and the collaboration w/ Timba kinda has people laughing at them. Go indie and get back to the basics...screw the money...screw the fame...screw airplay...just make cool music for the core fan base and perhaps they'll pick up some new ones along the way...

Nick said in an interview earlier this year that the band isn't interested in exploring guitars since they feel they've been 'done', but is very interested in exploring synthesizers. So, I'd imagine the next album will be even less organic than RCM, if not entirely done on synths. Given their preferences (at least according to Nick), I wouldn't look for any big use of guitar.

Sacrilege I knowand you'll all flame me, but I don't think there's anywhere left for them to go. I adore the band, but I actually could live without another album from them. Maybe it's time they hung up the frilly shirts?
Sorry.

Given their preferences (at least according to Nick), I wouldn't look for any big use of guitar. and Simon said the opposite in the recent interview on Jonesy Jukebox. They're involving Dom in the creative process, and he specifically said they want 'guitars'. So what Nick said months ago doesn't sound anything like what Simon recently stated.

We apparently have the same direction in mind!! ;D I mean look at the rock scene. You got bands like Arctic Monkeys, Muse, The Killers, and all of those bands are very alternative to the usual pop music scene. DD do different well. I think a little raw, indie attitude could go along way for them in the credibility department, if its not too late....

Guess I better vote!
I'll go with the Mark Ronson stuff, I'd love to see that!

Has anyone heard the new Killers album Day & Age? I was really impressed with it. In fact, I enjoyed it a lot more than RCM. While I was listening to it I thought to myself "this is the Duran album that never was."

I love clip 4 - Ice Cream by New Young Pony Club (I presume this means I have to vote for the 4th option yeah?). This is EXACTLY the style I would love for Duran to take next album. Much like their first two albums when the boys were at the peak of their songwriting powers we have a cool bassline leading the song, funky guitar riffs, atmosperhic keyboards, appropriate drumming, a catchy melody (noticeably absent on RCM), and very importantly SPACE AND SIMPLICITY. There's not a million sounds and layers going all on at once and every instrumentalist gets a chance to be heard. The song is just so simple but it works. Would love for the guys to recapture that musical magic in the 2000s
