What new material did they do with Ronson? I thought he was merely acting as a DJ - rearranging the playlist. That scarcely qualifies him to produce an album.
The best way to sell an album is to appeal not to as wide an audience as possible, but to as many different audiences as possible. RCM was geared towards the former - narrowly focused teenpop aimed at people with disposable income that like feeling trendy. Any band needs to also appeal to the more intellectual buyers, and to the more musically talented buyers, and to listeners of other genres, and to their core fans, to fans' ethnicities, to fans' life experiences, etc., etc., etc.
The boys need to expand their musical horizons.

I voted for Mark Ronson-type stuff. I loved the Paris concert and would enjoy seeing them perform live with him as well.

So with that in mind Nightboat (great posting) - how would u vote on the list or what directon (with examples) would you suggest?? Thanks! Electronica with dirty guitars, Mark Ronson brass heavy but dancey, Retro-electronic but stilll modern, Dance/Funky electronica, these are all variations on the same theme. Electro is electro, no matter how you slice it. And electro didn't work for them. Rock orientated but still edgy, Rock and Roll but still modern, these definitions indicate that rock is a thing of the past. Rock and roll will never die. However, Duran Duran are not a rock band. Neil Young eats bands like this for breakfast. Indie rock is a trend. I love indie, but it's as limited as rap - one can only do so much with it. What works best for Duran Duran? Roger loves a dance beat. John likes a mild light jazz sound. Nick likes a very "euro" sound, tending towards a string section. Simon likes songs about f___ing. Warren leaned hard towards classical, Andy was straight-up rock, and Dom is exactly in the middle. They can work with their individual preferences, with one more favored for a particular song. The band have to have input from their guitarist, as all three are the only ones that have music education. John recently said that he still can't read music! They have to mature. It doesn't matter that there are adorable little 5-year-old fans, the bulk of the fanbase, actual and potential, is in the 36-45-year-old range. They need to release material that the New Geezers can get into for years to come. Instead of it being about f___ songs, maybe Simon could write a divorce song. They can draw from their roots and do a vampire song a la Nightboat. Vampires never go out of style. The hard thing for all bands is writing around the current global economy, it's especially hard on glam/bling bands like DD. But they can't do a video about bird-chasing while yachting in Antigua, or about spoiled rich junkie celebrities. At the same time, dressing too far down and playing the Joe Average Guy card wouldn't work, either, they're too well known. So what sort of styles would I suggest? I'd be very interested in hearing their cover versions of these songs:
