The original Star Wars movies just had a magic and a lot of that probably had to do with the chemestry of the actors. The prequels didn't have that same chemestry. Absolutely. I think that's the prequals' biggest downfall. So many decent actors, and no chemistry between them, nada. The stories were incredibly convoluted as well. One of my absolute favorite things about the original trilogy was the obvious sexual tension between Han Solo and Leia early on. The way they bickered, you just knew they'd develope feelings for each other eventually. Luke's maturity throughout the trilogy was done fairly well too. As for the secondary alien characters, I happen to really like Chewbacca, Jabba the Hutt, and even the Ewoks. But what seperates them from the cheesieness of the others (not counting the droids) was the fact that they didn't speak "Galactic Basic". For the Wookies and Ewoks, it made them more interesting to not know exactly what they were saying. Solo's reactions to Chewy were the only real indications of Chewy's personality. But it showed Chewy's loyalty and intelligence without making him sound silly. (I also love the fact that Chewy's character was based off of Lucas's dog, I believe.) The Ewoks, though childish, where still kind of cute and fun, until they learned GB. Some Ewok spin-off movie did that and completely ruined them for me. Even though Jabba the Hutt was subtitled, I still like the fact that he didn't speak in GB. The way he spoke was much more menacing. I got the impression he's basically meant to be a fearsome Mob boss-type character, and I think they pulled that off pretty well. I certainly wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley. Jar-Jar and most of the other aliens in the prequals however, just came off as ridiculous and a failed attempt at humor to me. Nothing particularly endearing about them at all. The droids are cool, but what they have is the buddy-thing going on. I like R2-D2 for the same reasons I like Chewbacca, and I think C3-P0 was a perfect "straight man" to R2's impulsive personality. Great post, as usual, Droid. And while I was reading your post and a few others (hey sueb1863 and errbt) - it crossed my mind that we were all young and on the edge of our seats when those movies were made......very much like our experience listening to music back when Duran were first making their mark. There was no internet (well, unless you were in the military <grin>) and no leaks of plots, music, etc. An audience really got a first hand experience, and - something else I often think about and feel like is missing today.......a shared experience. You mentioned the sexual tension between Han and Leia (and yeah, that awesome in those movies....I think you described it perfectly).....and there was also Luke in the mix. In Empire when Vader reveals to Luke that he's his father.......I just remember being an 11 year old kid sitting there going "NO WAY!!!!". Those five words turned everything on its head. Then in Jedi learning that Luke has a sister.......it was fresh and unexpected and exciting. I wonder if it was the same experience for adults at the time. I'd imagine in large part that it was just due to it being a more innocent time. With the prequels, as we've all said - the chemestry wasn't there, the direction wasn't good, and if all of that wasn't bad enough - really, we knew how it was all going to end. Not that there weren't surprises. Ninja Yoda was quite the surprise (well, at least the tv commercials kinda broke me in before seeing the movie.......I was laughing so hard in the theater (completely contrary to my nature.....I like a very quiet theater experience.....well, unless I'm going to see Beavis and Butthead or Drag Me to Hell, or something like that) that I was embarassed. Lucas might as well have been MOCKING Star Wars. And again.....the Gladiator scene. Unexpected......but in the worst way. I have no memory of the dialogue in that scene because all I could hear in my head was "are you not entertained?!!?!?" I think that's why I love old movies and old music (though I still buy a ton of new stuff too). There's a purity in much of it that feels missing today. Today's culture is so fake and put on and kinda pathetic. It's not *quite* as bad with films....probably because they require a much larger investment. And we're all probably to blame for a lot of it. As a culture, we dissect and analyze everything to death. But......movies and tv were newer mediums then. I'm rambling.....but cool posts from everybody. Very interesting and "ah....I hadn't thought about that before" observations (well, at least for me <grin>). Oh yeah - and I agree that Lucas definitely overdid the CGI in the preqs. They looked like a freggin video game and took away the sense of realism.

I think the thing that REALLY ticked me off about the prequels was how he turned Amidala/Padme from this strong, kick ass woman to this pitiful thing that just gave up. Not even GETTING me started on the plot HOLES between the original trilogy and the first three. I'm sorry; but for me, Star Wars will ALWAYS be just that -- NOT episode IV.
I always loved the first three movies for the fact that Leia was such a STRONG female character. She took no crap from anyone and you BELIEVED she could stand on her own when she had to. Padme started out that way and then progressively got weaker. It was as though Lucas really didn't know how to flesh out the characters beyond Anakin/Vader, the Emperor and Yoda. IMO the prequel characters weren't "whole" the way Han, Leia and Luke were. Even Lando was more believable.

Someone told me that a friend of theirs who had never seen Star Wars watched all six movies, in order, and came to the conclusion that the Star Wars series was about Darth Vader's fall and redemption - Darth, not Luke, was the main character and the entire series was about HIM. This friend saw Luke, Han and Leia as the BAD guys because they were getting in the way of what Darth was trying to do.
And if you think about it - the way Lucas set up the prequels to be all about Darth, if you watch it in order, this person is absolutely right. Way to blow your series, George!
Anybody ever see this? If George Lucas had made "Lord of the Rings"...

IMO the prequel characters weren't "whole" the way Han, Leia and Luke were. Even Lando was more believable. Exactly - and Leia was a truly strong woman........not some womens lib type poser. Cary Fisher owned that role and there was never any doubt that Leia could more than hold her own with the men (part of the chemestry with Han, I'd say too.....he was kinda equal parts smitten, wary of rejection, intimidated, etc. - those two characters were great compliments of each other) and didn't need anyone taking care of her. She was a natural leader. When Luke and Han go to rescue her in Star Wars......."Into the garbage chute fly boy!". Lol. sarahb1863 - the person you mentioned that watched the 6 movies in order......thats an interesting perspective for them to have watched the movies from.....not having the same expectations as those of us that had seen the original three. I mean - we had all sort of vaguely imagined the things that came before the originals.

To me the original star wars (episode iv) was the best ,and it's strange how Leia was a strong character in a new hope and Empire, but weak in Jedi, then again when i was 13 i loved Leia in that next to nothing gear, but was surprised when Luke & Leia was brother & sister, you would of thought that Ben (Obi Wan) Kenobi would (as a ghost) haved used the force to keep these two apart, then again he did send Luke to a shit planet called Dagobah ;D There is a great disturbance in the force (another remastering edition),a rumour is about a Blu Ray release in November 2010,episodes iv,v,vi remastered (Again) and with new added scenes (Again),and deleted scenes
