it's true! the women there sacrifice their anniversaries to attend DD related meetups. They also have 10 foot shrines of posters and assorted memorabilia and they name their kids after the members of the band! I ain't shelling 35 to just read and look at all that! They should do a documentary of that forum and call it "when soccer mums go psycho!" Word has it there is a fantasy xxx rated section in that forum of written stories of what soccer mums would love to do to the members if they had their way. If it's true, Duran has reason to fear at those meet and greets! Just for the record, you don't have to be psycho or some sort of freak to have a healthy fantasy life. The key term being "healthy". Being able to differentiate between real and make believe. DDM is a good place to kill some time and just let go of the stress of everyday life and chat with friends. And there are actually some very talented people there. Some have had things published. (Not DD related fiction, but often inspired.) I am not going to sit here and read things bashing people who are some very good friends. We are all people and deserve respect. Fine, if you are not interested in the fan fiction, just don't bother with it. But don't go around making statements like this disparaging those who have an interest in it. As for shelling out $35/yr. to be there, I have no problem with that. I have made some very good friends there and would not give it up for the world. Are there people there who are a bit off? On occasion. And those who go too far or get too creepy are typically shunned and leave, or get banned if they are abusive. But forums go through cycles of sorts. Times when things are good and the band is active and there is something to actually talk about. And there are the slow times and we are all just there looking for a little escape. A place to tell jokes, share funny links, and yes, ogle pictures of the men we have desired for 3 decades. [/rant] We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress.

Speaking of DDM, let me share a few stories of people I've actually met. For instance there was a DDM who actually lost her job because she was flying around the country seeing them. She bought multiple VIPs and her boss said either Duran Duran or her job, so she quit her job! Yeah that's really smart.
Another story, I have a good friend who's also part of the Duranie world (though not so much anymore, and has sold most of her things) and both of us were friends with another fan, who was WAY obsessed. We'd all get together and the other friend would actually talk NOTHING except how she couldn't wait to meet John and how they are the greatest band ever, etc. Her favorite movies are all of John's and her "other" favorite bands are Power Station, Neurotic Outsiders and John Taylor's solo albums. Her only interest was DD. Anyway, my good friend's husband was getting mad at her because the obsessed friend would come over and spend hours doing nothing but DD related. There was another obsessed fan we all knew, and both of the two obsessed fans ended up spending tons of money to travel around the country. What ended up happening was my one friend and me broke off the friendship with the other two because they were way too obessed. Both had families by the way and both had family problems caused by their obsession. When both of us questioned various things about the band the other two wanted little to do with us. Need I say both of them are DDM members AND are among those who always buy VIPs? Btw, if one's fantasy is sleeping with DD and they are beyond teen years, that isn't healthy, that's disturbing. I outgrew my fantasy about sleeping with them when I started dating actual men.

The three women I mentioned would do anything they said. In fact one of the women actually buys them presents when they are in town and takes them to their hotel (she stays there when they are in town).

A handful of people who are not well balanced do NOT represent the majority of the membership body. There are still a number of active members who post and who have normal lives. @ least 3 I know of are pregnant right now, and dealing with possible complications. We are all there for them and offering support and well wishes. We rely on each other. It had gone far beyond just an appreciation for the band. We are friends, and we DO have lives. Yeah, some can afford to travel. I can't really. I wish I could. If I won the lottery, I would in fact follow a full tour. I love to travel and my hubby could see sights and we could go all over and I could see the shows. Anyway, I am well aware that will never happen. I am also aware that I will never sleep with a band member, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to or that I wouldn't dream of it. And NO, I would NOT leave my hubby for anyone. 21 years happily married. Simon, or any of them, are mere fantasies. I would never want to "BE" with them in some sort of relationship. But a fantasy life IS healthy and if I choose to dream of that, it is my choice. I am not going to stop my hubby from dreaming about Joan Jett. Hell, I helped him talk to her when he got her to sign his arm and had it tattooed a couple of years ago. Who am I to kill his dream?
And just a side note, it is really insensitive to make comments and/or jokes about people getting "canned" when so many of us ARE out of work and hurting quite a bit! I WISH I were able to afford to choose to quit a job to follow the band. I have never made that kind of money, and never will, most likely. Some people are in that position and like to follow the band. I will not judge them. It's their money. But for me, I would love to have a job right now, first to pay my bills and second to save up for the next tour! So I would appreciate it if you would have a little more sensitivity.

I'm not wasting my time. It is obvious this person is the one who has no grasp on reality. If you are not a member of a board, and have not been there, then it is not your place to judge anyone. If you don't know the people, you don't have a right to say things like that about them. I KNOW how I feel and I am not the type to lie, so I am not going to feel like I should be worried about my marriage because some creep on a board thinks I would leave my husband fora romp with a band member. *shakes head @ the sheer audacity of some people*
