I think paying for a DDM membership is worthwhile depending on where you live. To me, for instance, living in Brazil, it's absolute useless. When Duran announced their south american tour back in 2008, I got absolutely crazy. Immediately I got in touch with DDM to check what benefits I could get by being a member. What did they tell me? Nothing more than getting pre sale for tickets. No VIP packages at all. Being obsessed for DD as I am, I'd never lose the chance to get the best place in the audience and meet them. So, I totally agree with Libertygirl, I've done by myself: I just standed in the venues to get tickets in the 1st day of sale, I've spent the whole day in the queue to be the 1st to enter the place (and I did it, and in the 3 concerts I was in front of Simon), got passes to meet them through a friend (and it was an amazing meet and greet, they were all very kind) and of course met them at the airport and hotels, where I took pictures, got autographs, talked to them and they were so lovely all the time. NO MONEY in the world could pay the terrific days I've spent. No DDM membership could give me this experience. And I got it all only by being persistent. Of course, if you live in countries where they are always touring, maybe it's interesting to get pre sales and meet and greets. But I still think the best things you can do by yourself, wherever you are.

I was a member for 2yrs got zero benefits. Why pay for forum boards when there was dd.com and other sites like this one for free far as chatting about DD. My ticket experience. I had the BEST HIGH speed Internet service at my corporate office and was on there the second the tickets went on sale twice. Both times, I was offered seats in the back corners! Worst seats in the house. Course both times within minutes awesome seats were on ebay. I still think its rigged some how where they these sellers had access to get the great seats from the 'pre-sale'. I recall pretty much everyone on the forums had the same experience unless you paid the big VIP bucks they offered you a poor seat saying nothing else available. I ended up getting better tickets when they went on sale on ticketmaster. I've heard blurbs they are trying to make laws about unfair ticket selling practices in the USA and hopefully they will do so. Maybe its just me, but I think I would be embarrassed for them to know I paid hundreds of dollars for them to come out in some room or hall way and say hello and perhaps take a photo. I've never approached them even though they were staying at the same hotel. I have a feeling if I ever met Simon and he looked at me I would just faint or not be able to speak.

I'd rather meeting them for "free" too If there's no other way, of course I'd pay for a DDM membership only to meet them. But only if I had sure I'd get it. As far as I know, even if you're a member, you are not sure 100% that you're going to meet the band. And for free it's more informal indeed. Believe me, next time, don't miss your chance to talk to Simon. I had the same feeling as you, but once you're in front of him, talking to him, laughing (you now how much he's funny), you just grab the moment and it becomes one of the best memories of your life.

Whether or not I renew pretty much depends on whether they have a US tour or not. I've never done VIP (which is too expensive for me). So I don't know what it's like.

The DDM forum is definitely a different animal than this one, though I enjoyed posting there and met a few really cool people I consider good friends. As I think was pointed out in another thread recently, this ProBoards forum really is more inclined to engage in actual discussions about the music. Not that they don't do that over at DDM, but it seems to happen more frequently here. I agree with you. To me DDM forum is to meet friends and have "fan chat". This place is for music comments and discussions.

General rule of being a music lover: never join the official fan club, because it's always a scam. Yep. It's the same company doing this stuff for tons of bands/artists and is purely a business thing. Being a fan doesn't have to cost that kinda $.

Oh yeah...I did it! :-) Ya know -- when people call me "Moonie", it makes me think I should be wearing my hair in a short ponytail, wear a white robe and handout leaflets at an airport. :-) Sorry -- couldn't resist. Back on topic...;-) I've never been a member of DDM. I find it offensive to be charged for being a fan. I know Duran aren't the only band doing this, but I think it's kind of cheesey.
