i've heard the album about 20 times now and i think it's the perfect blend of old and new.
it has lots of 80s retro charm but it also had modern sounds and production going on.
i think it's the best thing they've done in ages and ages.
i don't think of it as rio part 2 or the 3rd album that never was but it sure fits in nicely with the duran duran canon!!
well done boys! you and mark ronson should be plenty proud of the album you created!

I'm hearing the early Duran vibe all over the new stuff. Roger's drumming......Simon's vocals (listen to the last half of Being Followed.......undeniable!).......Nick's synths - all remind me of their early stuff. Not only that, but the production by Ronson allows the listener to hear each individual instrument as you could in their early work (and sorry, but that's not generally been the case for a long time).
And the whole "follow up to Rio" thing: first of all, that's a bit open to interpretation. Does it mean the goal was to write/record a batch of songs that are copies of the Rio album? I seriously doubt it. Always seemed more like the idea was to go back to their early APPROACH to writing and recording songs, including using the same instruments - rather than the whole "whats the current trend and how to do we jump on the bandwagon?" thing that they've been doing for a good while. They hit a peak in the mid-80s and there's been preasure since then to sustain it or to climb back up there.
For my money, this is the best stuff they've done in many, many years (gotta hear the entire album and give it a few months to objectively speak to that). Even Astronaut with Andy on board pales in comparison to the new stuff (and I'm an Andy fan).

I'll never understand why some people get SO angry over this stuff, but then again, the ones who don't like it are always the ones screaming the loudest.
Personally, I could CARE LESS if the band charts in the US, the UK...etc. If I based what I listened to on the charts, my ipod would be empty. Duran Duran charting? I don't give a piss - and perhaps the band is getting closer to that way of thinking as well. Good for them if they are, make music you enjoy and get out there and play live.
A band I've loved for decades is making new music, that's awesome, I hope I like it (and so far I do), but if I don't? Oh well, they have a vast catalog for me to enjoy, anything new is a bonus.

Agree 100% and I hope folks give Ronson the credit he deserves instead of complaining about his hyping the album. He's done an outstanding job and brought the best out of this band. A year or two ago, I was the guy saying "I'm not sure they have any creativity left.....". Ronson and the band have shot that notion down big time - and I'm happy to have been wrong.

Why be so angry about it? I, for one, don't give a crap if they chart or if they appeal to the younger generation. I LIKE what I've heard so far and that's enough for me. Nail on the head. Not to mention: Amen, sista!

ok, some are gonna like it and some won't....That's ALWAYS the case with music. I do predict that the next year will be exciting for those who continue to follow the band and the new music. As I said earlier, they are definitely paying homage to the past, but are doing the music they want to do in a modern way. Having heard BF, I think it has the potential to be a relative "hit". You heard it first here folks ;-p

I agree, the band are giving their original sound more than a nod and a wink BUT doing so in a way that leaves longtime fans with that classic vibe but without sounding retro.
From what I have heard so far, three tracks in full, this just could be the album that I play as much as the classsics from the early 80's.

WTF!!!!!!!!
thread=25412 post=285710 time=1291849369]Listen, folks, the bottom line is that All You Need Is Now sounds more like Big Bang Generation and Want You More than it does like anything off the first three albums. All this "this is the follow-up to Rio SATRT etc" rubbish that is getting bandied around, let's just stop it in its tracks shall we?
Wild Boys and View to a Kill and then of course Notorious were the follow ups to Rio and SATRT... So let's stop this ridiculous pretence that there is some 27-year void which needs filling.
And of course the synth sounds being "retro" is just guff as well, that "windscreen-wiper noise", not to mention the synth bass on AYNIN are blatantly modern synths which use samples, as opposed to Jupiter 8 stuff etc, which use raw waveforms!
The fact is, this DD album sounds EXACTLY as though it shared a producer with Astronaut and RCM, not to mention Medazzaland.
The songs are average... there is no sure-fire chart-topper here. The songs appeal to us - the older audience, who already like DD's catalog, not to "Da Kidz" (Duran newcomers).
And while we're on the topic, the Emperor has NEW CLOTHES too!!

Lol - too much information. That second half is pretty awesome, huh? If Tel Aviv had lyrics, it would be this song. Tel Aviv DOES have lyrics, haven't you heard the alternate version that appeared on the debut album remaster this year? I'm getting a' Sound of thunder' vibe I love that drums/bass synth sound that runs through it, just as it does on the debut album.
