Funny, I thought there were tunes on Medazzaland that nodded back to the first couple albums. I got Medazaland on import when it was first releases as it wasn't available in the UK at the time my following of the band had waned but I thought the album was excellent, sure it was different, but I enjoyed the experimental values of the record and IMO rate it right up there with their best. I was not and still aren't a fan of the 'Wedding Album' far too many fillers and only three or four excellent songs on that record, tracks like 'love voodoo' ' sin if the city' stink IMO

I'm hearing the early Duran vibe all over the new stuff. Roger's drumming......Simon's vocals (listen to the last half of Being Followed.......undeniable!).......Nick's synths - all remind me of their early stuff. Not only that, but the production by Ronson allows the listener to hear each individual instrument as you could in their early work (and sorry, but that's not generally been the case for a long time). And the whole "follow up to Rio" thing: first of all, that's a bit open to interpretation. Does it mean the goal was to write/record a batch of songs that are copies of the Rio album? I seriously doubt it. Always seemed more like the idea was to go back to their early APPROACH to writing and recording songs, including using the same instruments - rather than the whole "whats the current trend and how to do we jump on the bandwagon?" thing that they've been doing for a good while. They hit a peak in the mid-80s and there's been preasure since then to sustain it or to climb back up there. For my money, this is the best stuff they've done in many, many years (gotta hear the entire album and give it a few months to objectively speak to that). Even Astronaut with Andy on board pales in comparison to the new stuff (and I'm an Andy fan). Great post, I agree that you can really hear each distinct instrument in tracks like 'Being Followed' and that has to be down to the band and Ronson wanting it to sound that way. Simon said on the One show that they went back and re learnt how to play in a certain way that they had done some 28/29 years ago. Teaching an old dog old tricks so to speak!!

"All You Need Is Now" (the single) isn't representative of the album to be quite honest. It's one of the least classic-sounding tracks on the album. However tracks like Runway Runaway, Being Followed, Before The Rain, Mediterranea and Blame The Machines are about as classic as you could possibly get.
I just knew someone would have to come on here and try to ruin the momentum though. Bottom line is, if I think that the new tracks sound like the first two albums, then nobody is going to make me change my mind because that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Other people might get a different vibe from the album, which is fine, but I do personally defend my view that it's the closest we're ever going to get to the "old sound".

Why would you want an 'old' sound?

Not literally. Something *similar* to the old sound.

Being Follow sounds like it has a bit of 'I Take The Dice and 'Of Crime and Passion'.
as for the other tracks. no i do not think they are a follow up to Rio. I think they are a follow up to RCM. The sound is great. I think it is better than most of that throw away pop crap that's out there now.
by the way, i liked each album and i listen to them all the time. why? because i can relate to the music. i like tons of other bands but i always put Duran Duran first.

So 'Being Followed' gets even better than the snippet Mark Ronson played for us a few weeks ago?

Don't agree about the individual instruments thing - Nick has said in recent interviews that he likes to layer synth parts like an orchestra, and even Warren said back in 1993 that Nick was using too many parts, and he got him to stop (although I paraphrase that) I don't agree that there is anything distinctively different in any of the band members' contributions so far that distinguishes their performances from their performances on previous albums. Albeit, based on my hearing all of AYNIN + the various snippets. The drumming, for one, is identical in style to recent stuff!

Oh give me a break, girlfriend "I just knew someone would have to come on here and challenge my set-in-stone rosy cloud views of the band who can do no wrong", more like! .... ;-) I have no intention of ruining any momentum, and in any event at the moment there is no momentum to ruin .....
