I think something that has been overlooked is that yes, Skin Trade was too much of a departure for your part-time Duran Duran fan and it is no surprise it tanked. But besides the style of music, the one big difference between Duran Duran in 86 and Duran Duran from 81-85 (aside from two missing Taylors) were the VIDEO CLIPS.
Let's be honest - the Skin Trade video was pretty crap. It made a slow grower even more boring. And Notorious wasn't much better. I don't care that it was cloned from Higher Love by Steve Winwood, it was only a little less boring than Skin Trade. And as for Meet El Presidente - well the video is more forgettable than the song.
For five years Duran Duran were five pretty/handsome men making amazing video clips that took viewers away to another place and time for four minutes of breathtaking adventure and romance. But in 1986 Duran Duran were down to three members, releasing unusual music with boring, run-of-the-mill film clips.
What once made them great was now not so great. It's no wonder the band's fortune plummeted.

Ouch That was an unusual post, slightly heavy on the negative side for you Tony? Contrary to what others say about Skin Trade, I think it's f-ing brillliant! Yes guilty as charged, but it might generate a bit more discussion this way hey It's still true though - from Notorious onwards Duran Duran never seemed to put as much emphasis on music videos. Less royalties does mean less money to spend on film clips, so I guess there were economic concerns. But hey back in '86 if Peter Gabriel could afford to spend whatever he did on the Sledgehammer music video, reputedly the most played video on MTV of all time, then I'm sure Duran Duran could have afforded it. And it was only the video which allowed Sledgehammer to make number one; sure it was a decent enough tune - but please - NUMBER ONE??? I think Duran wanted to prove to people that they weren't so dependent on film clips and it was all about the music. Another miscalculation - music videos were still very important back in the 80s and 90s and there were certain artists that we as fans expected big things from. Waiting to see the latest Michael Jackson video back then, for example, was an event. Duran Duran could have been mentioned in the same vein. So when they started to produce what everybody else was doing, and weren't groundbreaking or flashy enough to grab the public's attention, then this was one less string to their bow. After the split Duran Duran needed as many strings in this bow as possible to maintain their place near the top. Sadly it just wasn't enough.
