LOL! There was really NOTHING for me before DD! Duran Duran is my Alpha and my Omega! But seriously, they were my first favorite band at around 12 years old. Before that, sure, I liked songs on the radio and my Mom would listen to music. We all liked Chicago, Elton John, ABBA and the Bee Gees (lots of disco!) and listened fairly extensively to them. And I might have perked my ears a little at Michael Jackson in his Thriller heights. I've said it before here on the forum, that I was blown away the first time I watched/listened to the Reflex and I declared it my favorite song at the time (age 11), but it wasn't until my older sister "discovered" them watching "Do They Know It's Christmas" in late 1984 and started getting all their albums that I really committed myself to their music. My sister rented Sing Blue Silver and the video album and eventually got the first 3 albums. I was completely open to them since I loved the Reflex, so it was great to finally hear and see the rest of their work. And, needless to say, I was completely hooked. And they, in turn, opened up a lot of doors to other music as well. Our older cousin, who helped shepherd my sister through becoming a DD fan, introduced us to the Police (her favorite band) and U2. And reading No. 1 and Smash Hits (or Star Hits, as it was known in the States) magazines (thanks to DD being in them so often!) introduced us to a lot of Brit Pop/Brit Alt stuff like Depeche Mode and the Cure. Reading about DD's influences got me into Roxy Music and Bowie. And I may have mentioned this before as well, but in a Smash Hits poll, the members of DD (and others) all put Kate Bush high on their lists, which made me seek her out and she became one of my other favorites!

I got into Duran Duran at 12, so it was right at the time when I was first discovering "my own music", and not just listening to what was in my parents' collection. But before then, the records I listened to the most were various best-of compilations my family owned: Queen's "Greatest Hits", ABBA's "Greatest Hits Vol. 2", the Beatles' "20 Greatest Hits", and an Elton John collection called "Milestones". Oh, and the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack (thanks to madoldlu for reminding me by mentioning the Bee Gees). And although I didn't listen to them as often, I also enjoyed music that my parents owned by Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers-- the latter of which I credit with instilling me with a love of great harmonies. Being a kid, I had also owned a few childrens' records before that... a Disneyland Records release of "The Nutcracker Suite", and embarrassingly, a Chipmunks album lol. I also had a K-Tel compilation called "Dimensions", which had a mix of pretty good (Pat Benatar, Hall & Oates) and not-so-good (Manhattan Transfer, Oak Ridge Boys) songs from around 1981.

I discovered DD around 1985 - i was 12 years old. Before DD i listened to NENA (german pop singer), ABC and (please don't hate me for that - if you know the band) MODERN TALKING hahahaha
i started with ARENA and became a fan. beside DD i listed also to WHAM, FGTH, BROS., CULTURE CLUB and Spandau Balett. Later i turned to rock music (Warrant, Enuff Z'Nuff, Winger, KISS and stuff like that) but never lost my love for DD :-)

I bought 4 records before I bought Planet Earth on 12" in 1981.....
They were:
Dougal and the Blue Cat - I was 5 at the time I think. Madness - Absolutely Blondie - Parallel Lines The Jam - Setting Sons
I was lucky, as a kid I was surrounded by music thanks to my dad, loads of The Who, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Cat Stevens etc....
I've got into other bands since Duran, but like many others, they're the soundtrack to my life.

I was pretty young pre-DD (6 in 1981) so my tastes in music hadn't developed. I remember listening to Abba, the Police, the Beatles - records that my mum and dad had...

I remember well that Modern Talking tried to comeback in the late 1990s?
