The original Video Album is not available on DVD or BluRay. I’ve been watching the Rio Classic Album film, and there’s quite a bit of behind the scenes film from the videos made in Sri Lanka. Wouldn’t it be great if they reissued the Video Album with behind the scenes extras and a blooper reel?
How do we get the Band to make this? Who owns the rights to it? Why hasn't it been released on DVD already? Does anyone know?
So many questions have I

As i've mentioned before, the original plan was that it would be a mix of mix of the videos, animation, behind the scenes footage & documentary - &, in late 1982, it was given the provisional title of "Union Of The Snake"...
...so, whilst i don't know if any animation was ever done, there was certainly loads of footage filmed for a very different version of the video album - so whilst i won't be holding my breath, there's always the chance that something akin to what you're suggesting could be released.

I have no understanding as to why this hasn’t been released on DVD, etc...it won a Grammy! To me it’s the Rio of all the official videos.

I used to own an Asian DVD release of this with a really weird cover listing the original 1978 lineup! This one, bought it for $5 new from one of the Korean online stores in the early 00s: www.discogs.com/Duran-Duran-First-11-Videos/release/1968290 It looked quite decent at the time (ie the video quality), apart from the cover. Reason they do not release it on DVD is that nobody buys them anymore and that video sourced material looks pretty unwatchable on modern large-screen TVs. It could be something for the FanClub though. Think I still have the VHS somewhere.

I also have the VHS. I agree the market is not there for DVDs. Also, all the “big” videos off the Video Album are on the Greatest DVD. I’d put this in the unlikely category of ever being released, especially when announced projects like Budokan aren’t even seeing the light of day.

Yeah I have the original VHS too It stands out a mile, big packaging, not cardboard and not like the usual smaller/later plastic VHS/beta cover packaging Literally it's in vintage VHS packaging if you like ! Loved everything on it, it was bizarre in a way, I kinda felt I was owning porn eg GOF extended clip. Thought NightBoat was incredible & didn't MJackson copy DDs NB video idea to an extent. Dd did it first didn't they. Also loved how one video clip was linked to the next, can't remember if every clip was done in this manner yet the clips seemed to flow from one to another or were to an extent mixed when they began/ended. I remember that week in late November 83 when DD played thier SBS gig in my home town there was a video expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds and John & Roger attended talking about thier VHS video in a promo visit fashion. I was in year 9 and never wagged highschool that afternoon to see them. I Sure do regret it ! I also remember the talk around the video which was this was to be the future eg video albums, eluding to every creating videos for every single including album track and releasing them on video too with subsequent LP releases. Yet that never happened ! I tried googling footage from that Showgrounds video expo yet couldn't find anything However I found these JT, RT Adelaide interviews & 25 years later, same DD blokes again

I could be completely wrong here but didn't the Rio video have an animated aeroplane flying past at one point? I've tried to find footage on YouTube but it doesn't appear to exist anymore.

Yes, the animated plane is exclusive to the video album version of "Rio". I transferred all of my Duran Duran laserdisc's to DVD (yes I own all of them except "The Making of Arena") when I bought a used laserdisc player earlier this year. The DD video album quality isn't that great but I must say my "Working For The Skin Trade" transfer looks so much better than the DVD that was included with the 3-disc re-release of "Notorious". I wouldn't like to profit off of selling DVD-R's of official videos but I know some of you probably don't own some of these vintage laserdisc releases.
