Queen, The Doors, Blind Melon, INXS, Culture Club, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Journey, Skid Row, Chicago, The Undertones, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Styx, Judas Priest, The Pogues, ACDC..and more...have all replaced charismatic lead singers due to differences, death and any number of reasons, to varying degrees of success.
If Simon Le Bon ever left Duran Duran, could/should he be replaced? and who could step into his shoes?
Edit to add I used a site to look up some names, a quiz, but the answer page is broken. I've posted it in General, can anyone help?

I couldn't see it happening, myself. How many out of that list initially split because of the singer's death/departure and felt they couldn't carry on, yet reformed many years later for whatever reason? AC/DC and Van Halen, in contrast, just made the change and kept going.
Jake Shears, maybe? Used to singing dancy pop and has a flamboyant (no gay slur, there--you know it's true) stage presence.

The guy that sang lead on the song Story of Love by Voice of America. For the longest time I thought that song was an Arcadia song.

I can't imagine DD without Simon. Queen is a good example of how it just doesn't quite work without the original lead. Freddie WAS Queen in a sense.

Queen also wouldn't have worked without Brian May; those stacked guitar harmonies are every bit as essential to their sound as Mercury's voice. BTW, I'll smack the first smart-ass who suggests Tony Hadley.

I mentioned The Undertones in that list. Feargal Sharkey left and the band split, some of the remaining members formed That Petrol Emotion, a criminally overlooked band. The Undertones re-formed with a new singer a few years back, ironically from the same village as Feargal. They played in a bar a couple of miles from me. I was hesitant..Undertones but no Feargal? Could it work? In the end, and at the very last minute I went (deciding factor - I had missed the 'Tones the first time around, and they were one of the few on my 'list' of bands to see) It was a fantastic night, the new singer threw everything into it, but he was himself, not a Feargal clone and I'm glad I went. (It could have had something to do with the fact that it was an Irish band, playing in an Irish-owned bar, in an Irish stronghold of North West London, on St Paddy's night that made it what it was ) Maybe if the Kajagoogoo reunion doesn't work out, and Limahl is looking for another job? ;D

...perish the thought....I couldn't imagine it myself either, but I think the examples given here prove that it CAN be done (and done successfully) in a lot of cases. I love AC/DC with both Bon and Brian (tho I think Bon was technically a better singer). I think AC/DC went on to have one of their best selling albums with Brian tho (think "back in black"), and that came AFTER the death of Bon. I also love Van Halen with both Sammy and David. Some love David's flamboyance, and other's prefer Sammy's vocal. I reckon this just proves that replacing the lead singer is not always as unthinkable as some might think.
