There are just some lead singers that are synonymous with their groups. Simon is one of those. Agreed. When there is a cult of personality (loosely used, as some people can't stand him, so it's intense *negative* devotion, also) that follows a lead singer, replacing that singer is nearly impossible without people feeling that the band is no longer the same band. In addition, even critics and industry people that don't like Simon will admit that he has one of the most distinctive voices in pop music. That can't be replaced easily.

Well, couldn't John sing lead vocals? As in, Simon's replacement would be within the group. Hypothetically, speaking? I'd rather have them bring back Andy to sing lead then have to listen to John....sorry. Agreed, again. John is a fantastic and well-respected bass player, but I would cringe on every note if he became singer. When "I do what I do" came out, I was a hormonal teen in love with John. Even then I cringed at his vocals. And his acting, but that is another story...

Let's NOT get into a discussion about "I Do What I Do" (STILL shudders at the memories)

Out of all the remaining DD members, John does have the most experience singing lead vocals. He has a very sexy voice, it may not have the vocal range or clarity of Simon's, but I'd rather see him sing lead than some moron like Timberflake.

Okay, if we're talking about Justin as a replacement . . . pardon me while I gasp for air from laughing!!
I love people's sense of humour in here, I really do!!

*sings* "I do what I do to have you...haveyouhaveyou..IdoIdo"
Understandable that this is all a touchy subject, but its all good. I think most of us acknowledge that Simon cannot be replaced due to his contribution/history with the band as its lead singer. Nothing wrong with harmless discussion.

My opinion: Simon can't be replaced. Andy can't be replaced. Nick can't be replaced. Roger can't be replaced. John can't be replaced.
Thanks.

Nonetheless, I'd like to see more people entertain the thought purely for the hell of it. Imagine, if it makes it easier, that Simon left in a 100% amicable manner and actively encouraged them to find another singer.
I threw out Jake Shears' name. There's gotta be some more, whether feasible, radical or something in between. Think of a female singer, even.
