damn. All these CM singles are enough to drive me crazy. Question for those who are knowledgeable about this stuff, I know the first singles (12" versions) from the UK had both thin and slightly thicker paper sleeves. Is there anything on the vinyl itself (like numbers or anything) that would distinguish them? If I wanted to buy a copy from someone, is there a way to know which version they have before I have it in hand?

errbt - see attached for my most prized possession. I wonder if this came from the same batch as your Careless Memories. I call it my "careless" "Careless Memories". LOL, we must get the two of them together. They were clearly meant for eachother!

I never noticed much variation in the sleeves among the same release, but I always noted that both the UK 7" and 12"s of Planet Earth and Careless Memories (all versions I have) seem to be the thicker, sturdier sleeve type, while GOF (both 7" and 12") is thin and paperish (papery? paperesque?). Now I've got another reason to go home tonight and check through my vinyl again! ;D

Now I've got another reason to go home tonight and check through my vinyl again! ;D OK, short of bringing out microcalipers (if there is such a thing) I had to just go with eye/touch to look at sleeve thickness. Here are my layman's results: Planet Earth UK 12" first version (w/ sticker label on record w/ Duran graphics in white, blue, and red) - Thicker style sleeve Planet Earth UK 12" second version (w/ generic purple w/silver lettering EMI label) - same thicker sleeve Careless Memories UK 12" first version (w/ sticker label w/ Duran graphics in white, brown, and grey) - thick sleeve (i'd say even a bit thicker than Planet Earth) Careless Memories UK 12" misprint sleeve (w/ second edition generic black w/silver lettering EMI label) - same thick sleeve...or maybe a touch thinner, like Planet Earth - I could go insane going back and forth trying to feel for sure! Girls on Film UK 12" first version (w/sticker label w/ Duran graphics in white, light blue and darker blue) - thinnest, papery sleeve Girls on Film UK 12" later version with (w/ generic yellowish/beige w/black lettering EMI label) - same thin sleeve Planet Earth UK 7" - thicker sleeve Careless UK 7" - thicker sleeve GOF UK 7" - thin, papery sleeve. Among all the Duran UK 12"s, the only one I've ever seen with the really thin sleeve is GOF. Among the 7"s, it varies, with the RIO album's singles being thinner (except My Own Way, thicker - but I don't consider it a RIO single since it came out pre-album and with a different version of the song) but then there are some thicker ones again after that. Out of curiosity, does anyone have (or have they ever seen) a UK 12" pressing of HLTW that doesn't have the generic EMI label (yellowish/beige with black lettering), or The Reflex without the generic black w/ silver lettering? Every other 12" of that era was released with a sticker label featuring custom graphics fitting the design style of the sleeve in some way (with some also coming out in later editions with generic EMI labels), but I've never seen a 12" of HLTW with a label matching that of the 7" (pale yellow with the maroon trapezoid and using the same RIO style fonts as the sleeve), or The Reflex with a label featuring something in the style of the sleeve (or at least matching my UK 7", which has a plain blue label, but does feature the custom Duran font from the SATRT album). I'm just curious if there were in fact first editions of HLTW and the Reflex 12"ers with matching labels, and if so, I'd like to see them!
