Well, this is one show that seems to please our whole family (me, hubby, 3 boys and 1 girl). The boys love the auditions best for most of the reasons everyone here has said they don't. I like it all I guess. The beginning is for TV ratings and shock value and entertainment (because people love to laugh at other people's lack of talent and stupidity for some reason ) I also look forward to seeing how Paula is acting and if she needs her meds or is on too many meds at the time of taping. She was so quiet the 1st night (when Jewel was on) but she was back to her normal self on the Seattle show. I like the show, despite it's quirks. And last year, just by chance, was an "American Idol" year for me. A good friend of mine won tix to the AI concert and we ended up meeting all 10 of the finalists. Then in Sept I was in the Pizza Hut drive thru and Fantasia was in front of me in line. My son and I met her as well. So far, I think the NFL football player's daughter has been the best. That red lipstick lady (with her mom) has been the most entertaining (worst). Some of the others I just feel sorry for.

I watched about 10 minutes of the show, the first time I've watched American Idol in years. I too thought it was quite painful to watch. I moved on to the Disney Channel...lol. ;D

I watched the first two segments last night before having to head to bed.. the last person I saw was that Darwin the braless, lipstick wearing, fake blonde haired girl with her mother.. Paula was like OMG!!
She was so painful to watch..
I'll watch the rest of it later today.

Ugh I agree...
I didn't mind watching the bad singers just because of comedy relief.
But this season they should call it "Suckapalooza". They are focusing way too much on the bad singers and not the good ones...I don't care if only 7 people made it to Hollywood...I want to see them. Not shitty after shitty after shitty performance.
OMG! Darwin!! That was the first thing I said "that girl needs a bra!". My daughter was like "okay, aren't your boobs supposed to be up here?" Oh, and the nerdy, engineer guy...he was funny!
The "Don't Cha" montage was hysterical...and Red was just scary.
;D Kim

First, let me say, that I love American Idol and it's counterpart Canadian Idol. That being said, I am so tired of Simon and the other judges getting cranky over the "bad" singers over and over. Come on, you know that they are going to let the bad singers through because it makes for good t.v. and great ratings. I must admit that I do get some guilty pleasure out of the whole audition process, but I am truly waiting for Hollywood and beyond.

I don't mind the bad singers.. It's the ones that keep trying to please the judges after they told them no.. Like the one girl Hottie who kept singing and Simon was yelling her name over and over again to get her to stop.. Please people they told you no, now please move on.. Oh and mrsvirgo I can't wait for Canadian Idol either.. It's nice they plan them back to back..

OK, nobody is pointing a gun at these freaks and forcing them to audition. They are there for their 15 minutes, plain and simple. How many of them were shown crying as they were leaving, and saying "You will see me on TV again!!!" They don't care how they get there; they just want to be on TV, pure and simple.
Like somebody else said, this is not the first season of this show. If you are there to audition, then you know what the hell is going on. There are no innocent victims there.

I told Mark the other night that I would put money on it that there will be someone somewhere who has been rejected by them that will take their life or harm someone else. I can totally see this being a huge scandal. As bad as some of these kids are they believe they have talent and their families have told them they do. They've been lifted to the highest only to be shot down in a cruel manner (in their eyes). Seriously, don't be surprised if you see it some time.
No different than the talk show that drove a man to kill himself. Public embarassment (even if they did put themselves in the situation) can really drive someone to do bad things.
On the next Maury or Springer......
-------------------------------
As for me? I watch what I can bear and then turn the channel. I don't really watch it in full (although Mark will probably argue) until they are down to the last 12. That is really what matters.
I will admit that I LOVED the shouter from X Factor. He was brilliant!!!! ;D Saw him on Never Mind the Buzzcocks after he quickly held on to some fame.

I told Mark the other night that I would put money on it that there will be someone somewhere who has been rejected by them that will take their life or harm someone else. I agree. I don't know how closely any reality show screens their applicants. I think they have an obligation to not take advantage of people who are clearly disturbed for entertainment value, but they are also not responsible for the choices adult people make. Every bad thing that happens is not necessarily someone else's fault. A lot of things can cause an unstable person to harm themselves or others: too many drugs, not enough drugs, alcohol, lack of sleep, illness, being fired, being dumped etc. Having said that, I'm sure that WHEN it happens there will be a huge lawsuit and that will be the end of reality TV as we know it. And I say, good riddance.
