I just had a bizarre experience...
To make a long and boring story as short as possible, we needed some extra dough, so I answered an ad on Craigslist for a part-time bookkeeper. (Back story -- I am in my 3rd year teaching preschool, but prior to this, I did accounting for 9 years -- 7 of which with the same company).
So I go and meet the woman for the interview. She owns her own tax and accounting service and she needs someone to help with her accounts. My first impression of her is, well, she's Type A with a Capital A. Like, I would never see us becoming pals, knocking back a few at the local bar after a hard day of crunching numbers...you get me?
Anyway, she hires me and tells me "I will know if it is going to work out after a week." Looking back, not such a great thing to say to a new employee, right? Foreshadowing perhaps?
So I begin this job last Monday. I get there and she hands me the folder for the account from Hell. They are completely screwed -- they haven't balanced their "checkbooks" since last September (who does this?!!!! It's been almost a YEAR!) They've made deposits and have no idea who paid them, etc. In my head, I am like, 'WTF is this?'
So, I try my best in the 3 allotted hours to get this done. Well, I don't figure out this shit mess in time. In fact, it is so overwhelming and screwed up that I go in to tell her. She basically tells me that I made it worse. Nice....first day, not so good.
So, we sit down and schedule to meet again the next Monday (2 days ago) for our next day of work together.
Well, on Saturday, wouldn't you know it, my kids get a stomach bug, vomiting and everything else that goes with that package. And, of course, I get it on Sunday. I e-mail her at 5pm on Sunday (this, she said, was the best way to contact her) saying that I am sick and there is no way I can make it on Monday, can we please reschedule for another day this week.
No response.
I get my first and only check from her today with a note attached..."It's not going to work out."
I have never, ever been fired. Not even as a lazy teenager when I worked at a bookstore and would spend hours just reading books around the store! I only worked for this woman for 3 hours and she fired me. How pathetic. Part of me wants to crawl in a hole and another part wants to send her a big F-U letter.
