Leonardo DiCaprio for Blood Diamond? Where's Sacha Baron Cohen?
(CNN) -- "Dreamgirls" received a leading eight nominations for the 79th annual Academy Awards, but was shut out of two of the biggest categories -- best picture and best director.
The nominees for best picture are "The Departed," "Babel," "Letters From Iwo Jima," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "The Queen."
The nominees for best actor are Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland"), Leonardo DiCaprio ("Blood Diamond"), Ryan Gosling ("Half Nelson"), Peter O'Toole ("Venus") and Will Smith ("The Pursuit of Happyness").
The nominees for best actress are Helen Mirren ("The Queen"), Judi Dench ("Notes on a Scandal"), Penelope Cruz ("Volver"), Meryl Streep ("The Devil Wears Prada") and Kate Winslet ("Little Children").
The nominees for best supporting actor are Eddie Murphy ("Dreamgirls"), Alan Arkin ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Jackie Earle Haley ("Little Children"), Djimon Hounsou ("Blood Diamond") and Mark Wahlberg ("The Departed").
The nominees for best supporting actress are Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls"), Adriana Barraza ("Babel"), Cate Blanchett ("Notes on a Scandal"), Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine") and Rinko Kikuchi ("Babel").
The nominees for best director are Martin Scorsese ("The Departed"), Clint Eastwood ("Letters From Iwo Jima"), Stephen Frears ("The Queen"), Paul Greengrass ("United 93") and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Babel").
ABC will broadcast the Oscars live February 25 from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. Ellen DeGeneres is hosting the show.

i think he's a great actor. with that said....i haven't seen the movie but of the few clips i've seen on TV, i noticed how patchy his "accent" was.
is that what gets oscar nods these days? patchy false accents?? sad.

dicaprio should have been nominated for "the departed." "blood diamond" was craptastic and his accent went from afrikanner to aussie to english in seconds.
i am SO glad brad pitt didn't get nominated. "babel" is the most overrated film of the year and so was pitt's performance...
glad ryan gosling got props. haven't seen the film but have heard it's great.
i wonder if that old tea totaller o'toole shows up. i hear his performance is brilliant in "venus" and they should give him the oscar just cause he got robbed for "laurence of arabia."
i enjoyed "borat" but i don't think he should have been nominated...

Yeah, I've got no gripes about the other best actor nods, even touchy-feely Will Smith. But DiCaprio in that role?

I am an Oscar Whore. I have loved them since I was a wee kid. It's the former actor in me. I did lots of theatre growing up. I usually have a big party that night, make a ton of food, everyone joins in the betting pool (winner usually walks away with a really decent amount) and we just have a relaxing, fun night....debating performances, trashing people's outfits, etc..
good times..

My predictions: Best Actress: Helen Mirren. I predicted she'd be nominated (on a movie related board) before she was even nominated for a Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson. I also predicted her. Best Actor: I will guess either Forest Whitaker or Leonardo DiCaprio. I heard that Whittaker gave the best acting for that role. However, DiCaprio has been nominated several times without winnng. Best Picture: My guess is the Queen. The Academy loves movies like that. Best Director: My guess? Martin Scorcese. He's way overdue. Best Supporting Actor: This category is the hardest to predict. I guess either Alan Arkin or Djimon Hounsou. I say Arkin because he's been around a long time. Hounsou because I heard he got good raves for his role. I eliminated both Murphy and Wahlberg because they don't seem to be respected from what I've heard. I could be wrong. The only nominations I am sure I predicted correct are Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

I'll play the prediction game...
Best Picture - The Queen, though I personally loved Little Miss Sunshine
Best Actor - Forest Whitaker. Astonishing actor who's been a revelation for ages.
Best Actress - Helen Mirren, though Kate Winslet should get bonus points for her Extras appearance.
Best Supporting Actor - Much as I loved Arkin, I'm into redemption. I'd love to see Eddie Murphy or Jackie Earle Haley (Bad News Bears and Breaking Away are still among my favorite flicks) take it.
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Hudson (mostly because Beyonce would go apeshit), but I'd love for Abigail Breslin to take the award. It was one of those rare performances by a child actor that didn't make me want to walk out of the theater.
Best Director - It's probably going to go to Scorsese or Eastwood, though Greengrass and Inarritu did fantastic work with fairly complex situations.

Me - well, I saw flaws in Dreamgirls so I was glad it got shut out of Best Pic. and Best Director. I am NOT a great fan of Babel, and I am sorry its buttload of SAG contracts meant it won the SAG award.
My predictions: Actress - Helen Mirren Supporting Actress - Jennifer Hudson Actor: Forrest Whitaker Supporting Actor: Eddie Director: Marty
Remember, there are only 5800 or so pre-selected people who vote on the Oscars (people who have been asked to join the Academy, period). Academy members can vote on two categories - the one you opt into when you are asked to join the Academy and Best Picture. Actors typically opt into Acting, directors into Directing, etc. Beause of this very sketchy system, SAGs always hold a LOT of weight for acting awards, directors for Directing.
The only possible upset is Babel over The Departed. I don't think The Queen is going to win best Picture. I do think this will also go to The Departed.

I am over the moon that Peter O'Toole is nominated for Best Actor. He and Lawrence Olivier are my two all time faves. Just love them both. He is just amazing in this role and in everything he has ever done. I think he is truly one of the best actors to ever grace the stage or a screen.
I so hope he wins it but I doubt he will, sadly. I think it will go to Forrest Whittaker, who was also very good.

looks like i've got a lot of movie watching to do.
i've not seen any of these flicks, apart from "The Departed".
i definitely want to see "The Last King of Scotland". has anyone seen Forest Whitaker this season on ER? EXCELLENT. He is quite talented.
i think i'm going to see "Dreamgirls" with a girlfriend tomorrow, so i'll comment on Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy then.
ETA: looks like i need to see "The Queen" as well. i wasn't familiar with that one but i've just gone to check it out. looks interesting. and....YES....i live under a rock.
