So I went out last night for the first annual "buying of the school supplies" for my oldest who starts first grade this fall. Of course not having had to buy them since I was in college many moons ago school supplies have changed greatly!
My son was in a private Kindergarten last year & we didn't have to buy anything other than a backpack. They supplied everything. So it was a HUGE shock when I had to go to THREE different places to obtain all of the supplies, and dropping almost a good $100!!!!! (I'm still afraid to add up the exact final number from the 3 receipts!)
They also seem to have changed the whole thing from when I was a kid to where they have "communal" supplies. The only thing that will be just for my son are his scissors & one double pocket folder. No more picking out of cool pencils that are just your own, no more fun pencil boxes that are just your own.
I fully fully fully understand that it's also to help those kids that can't afford dropping $100 a year on school supplies, and I have no problem with it from that standpoint, but you know, it was kinda fun to pick out your own personalized school stuff.
I think it's rather crazy that here the government can fund a war with a cost of about $9-10 billion a month, but can't help schools provide some of the things we parents have to supply. I'm MORE than willing to pay my share believe me, but tell me why we as parents have to supply the post-it-notes or the ziplock bags, or the scotch tape or the dry erase markers for the board, the black sharpies for the teacher, 4 boxes of baby wipes (yeah, no joke) etc etc etc (There was a whole laundry list of stuff we had to buy...). I would think that these things should be supplied by the school?? Has it become that bad for the schools? I mean I knew they were strapped & it was like pulling teeth to get the last school bond passed but WOW!
Ok, like I said, I'm a newbie to the whole public school system these days so I'm sure I'm just momentarily shocked. ;D
Going back to school seems to need a 2nd mortgage!! ;D ;D
